Question about Baumatic 18 in. BDW45.1 Built-in Dishwasher

1 Answer

Door catch I have a BDW45.1 about 18 months old. Recently the door will not stay shut and springs open. The machine has a wooden door on the front. The door used to shut easily (under spring power) but now you have to lift it. I know you cah adjust the springs but couldn't find the adjusting screws mentioned in the manual? Also is ther any adjustment on the catch, as not convinced it is merely 'loose' springs causing the problem. any help much apreciated

Re: door catch

Right on the top edge of the machine - get a torch and look directly under the worktop - there are two hex-head screwws about 4" in from each side. Clockwise to increase spring tension.

Dispenser door will not open

Do you have calcium build-up on the lid or catch? Is the spring that makes the lid spring open broken? Are you placing pans or large plates up against the front of the dishwasher that is holding the lid shut? In most cases, question #1 is the cause. Mix some Lemi-Shine powder in some hot water and use an old toothbrush to clean it off. You can also use "CLR" to clean it off. Or you can just buy some Dishwasher Magic to clean out the calcium throughout the dishwasher.

The soapcover opens when I close the front door.

The spring on the soap cover is not pushing the catch tightly enough to keep it closed when there is vibration of the top cover of the machine. Remove the spring if you can and stretch it out a bit and remount it. Otherwise, replace the spring.

Door springs

If the door won't stay shut the issue is with the door catch not the door springs, But if you want to know where the door springs are you need to remove the outer cabinet of the dishwasher and you will see them on the lower sides.

Our LG dishwasher is about a year old and the door use to stop about 1/3 open when you open it, Now the door just freely goes down and I am not sure why. Can you help?

Your machine should be under warranty as it is less than two years old. Call LG and see what they say.
Otherwise if you do not have warranty here is a possible solution...
LG Dishwashers have a rope attached to the bottom of both sides of the dishwasher door and the rope winds around a pulley fixed on the side wall/chasis. The other end of the rope is hooked to a spring tensioner which sits vertically along the side of the machine.
Either one or both ropes may have broken as the ends have a plastic catch which normally break. Sometimes they need tensioning or they fall out of the pulleys.
It is a major job to get to them and if you are prepared to do this you need to be handy.
In order to get to them you need to disconnect and pull the machine out. Remove top cover, either two screws at the back or in front depending on the model. Then remove plastic kick board in front bottom of machine. These are clipped on. When you remove this there is another white plastic front cover with front legs attached to it. Remove the front screws on either side to pull this part off. Sometimes the wire harnessing is attached to this part and you need to unscrew before you pull it out.
Once you remove this follow the screws all aound the side panels both in front and at the back of the machine to remove panels. When you remove these you can look at the sides. Open and close the door to observe the door pulley mechanism I described. If the rope is not torn, Just look to the top of the springs, there is a screw which gives more tension to the springs. Tighten the screws and see if this rectifies the problem. Otherwise you need to order the brocken parts.
Good luck

Detergent dispenser will not stay shut so the soap power falls out before washing starts. Last time use I opened the door by mistake part way through the cycle. Could this have messed up the latch...

Opening the door did not affect the latch on the dispenser. The catch does wear out and can be replaced. This involves disassembling the door and a small jigsaw puzzle of springs and levers. If you are attempting I would advise taking pictures to refer to before taking apart.

Zanussi DA6142 dishwasher only works when the door is OPEN!

It is unlikely to be very difficult, however the door front panel and control panel will most likely need to be removed. Usually there are several screws across the top inside door edge and down the left and rigtht side of the door towards the hinges. They are often tamperproof torx or hex, sometime philips, so ensure you have the right driver. Also ensure the POWER IS OFF. UNPLUG the power lead and put it next to you- be 100% sure it is unplugged before you do anything. I cannot stress this enough, if the machine is hardwired into the power- LEAVE IT ALONE and call a repairman. The door switch needs adjustment or perhaps a part of the latch mechanism has broken. Sometimes the actual microswitch can become detached (plastic spigots break off) and it gets in a place where the door tongue turns it off when it should be on. Once the front panel is off, you can open and close the door a watch the mechanism to see where the problem is.
But if in any doubt, get a service manual for the machine, study it and diagnose the problem BEFORE delving into the machine.
Be careful, the edges of the door panels are quite sharp and once the panels are off, the main door can spring up due to having less weight on it.

The cover of detergent dispenser does not open..

It is most likely the flip need to be certain that the legs of the spring are inside the door edge and the spring does not swing freely...and there must be tension on the spring so that when the latch releases the door can also try this with an elastic, put the elastic inside the closed door and up around the drying solution knob, this will let the door flip open showing that the latch does work
