Our ps2 (scph 30002A) won't read discs and it makes a grinding noise when we try and play them.
we've tried all our games, some dvds, a cd (which sorta worked but kept skipping back and forth).
we've also tried cleaning the discs, putting sticky tape on either side of a disc to balance it, vacuuming the machine, diagnostic mode, roatating the machine.
i think its the lens alignment.

You shouldnt have too. I think I know the problem. Turn on your ps2 without a game in it and it would take you to the home screen. After that go to browser with your ps1 memory card and select it. And then it should give you an option to format it. Hope this helps
make shaw its not a ps3 game, not trying to be patronizing but ive had 3 people do that brought ps3 games and try to put them in ps2, its true sony are rip off merchants, my advise is not to get a wii ether go for a xbox 360, he will love you for ever. the download content alone you can get for rock band1/2 and guitar hero world tour is worth it
I had the same problem with mine. it would play the ps2 games just fine but when i put a DVD in, it would click and keep saying reading disc.. i took it apart and gently cleaned the lense with a qtip and now it works fine
the reason it makes the "grinding" noise is because the motor that moves the lens to read the disk is dieing, this generally happens when you have played your ps2 for a long time, this only happens to older consoles.
