Question about Washing Machines

Screeching sound; smell of burned rubber

I have a Maytag A512 that got a screeching sound and emitted the smell of burned rubber. I stopped the load and removed the clothing (not a real heavy load). I moved the dial to the spin part of cycle and the water spun out. Does this sound like a belt problem or motor problem? If it is a belt problem, where would I get someone to do the repair work? I love this washer, but thought I better shop for a new one. I'm finding most reviews for any of the current washers are terrible. I think I would like to fix the Maytag I have. One final problem. Last year, during Hurricane Lee, we had close to 2' of water in the basement laundry. However, the washer has worked ever since.

Maytag A512. This is probably about a 24 year-old washer.

SOURCE: My 12 yr old Maytag

Hi there, sounds like your bearings seized up on the drum, and your belt burned on it causing the smell.

I have a maytag washing machine model A712, during the spin cycle there was loud screeching noises and burning smell. What could be the problem.

problem could be the gearcase or the motor, to find out remove the motor and turn it with your hands to hear any abnormal sounds coming out, and also try to smell the motor see if it has a burning smell

Washing machine doesn't drain properly and makes screeching noises and has burning rubber smell

On this model the drain pump bearings tend to out often. You can open the machine cabinet and check the pump for a coin or a screw or something of that nature that may have gotten into it and is hanging the pump. Mostly the bearing will be bad and the pump will need replacing. Here is a link to the part.

Is it the motor?

The usual "screeching noise" in these washers is most often from the pump. Tilt the machine up so you can get the belt off (no tools required) and then turn all three of the pulleys. The center pulley is the transmission, the movable one is the motor and the last one is the pump. You will probably be able to feel or hear the noise and take appropriate actions. Good luck. AJ

Burning smell + Screeching sound but Belt is not the cause, then WHAT is?

A lot of people may be searching for help with horrible sounds and burned belts for Maytag and Admiral washers only a few years old from Home Depot etc. They used a cheap pump that has a corrugated sheetmetal ring that holds the bearings. Well as it runs the vibration and friction cause it to slip down and grind on the pulley as well as not turn easily. If you put the washer on it's back and turn the small pulley and it turns with a gritty feel or you can actually see a loose metal collar type ring thing that looks like a cookie cutte; then you have a bad pump.

There is a small access panel on the back of the washer. Three screws and two spring clips on the hoses and you're done (use big pliers on the hoses). Put the belt back on (just push motor to one side, it's not tight), then check for leaks and reinstall the cover. VOILA! You can find the pump on ebay for $25 or your local GE parts dealers for $50.
