Should be with the remote---whatever input on the rear the unit is connected to you have to switch the set to THAT input to see the DVD

SOURCE: my Toshiba portable dvd player says no Valid Disc

If the units under warranty you may want to contact Toshiba as it sounds your unit is in need of a replacement laser assembly.
If the unit isnt under warranty, Toshiba should be able to supply the parts you need and as long as you mark every thing that you remove, as to know where it goes when re-assembling the unit. The lasers arent difficult to replace. Good luck.

This fault is not a user repairable one, especially to blu-ray players. Contact the authorized service center for Westinghouse.

Hello there.

Push "Play/Pause" and "DVD Rec" on the dvd recorder a few seconds to see the service menu. There you can find your firmware version.

Post back the version for us.

Hope this helps.

5 yr old Westinghouse TV w built in DVD player. DVD player won't play. Tried several different movies, none will play.

First thing I would check is that you are playing regular DVDS and not BluRay. Your TV may be old enough not to accept BluRay. If it doesn't work with a regular DVD then you most likely have a bad reader which can be replaced but you will have to take the tv apart to get to it.

Blu Ray doesn't seem to work correctly

In all reality you are probably not doing anything wrong. You have a great TV and a pretty good BluRay player.

One thing about looking at movies in a store is usually you look at the screen further away than you usually do at home. Also, some of the demo disks they use are recored at a higher bit rate than many movies you can buy. Store displays are designed to show off TV units to make them sell, they do not care about them after you leave the store.

Many people do not know that some Bluray movies can actually look worse than DVD. Avatar for example is encoded at an average of 28 Mpbs on Bluray, and Avatar on DVD is encoded at around 7 Mbps. However, note that a 1080p screen has 6 times as many pixels as DVD, but in this case only 4 times the amount of data for the picture, so in all actuality Bluray has a lower quality picture per pixel than DVD. Some Bluray movies claim that they are 1080p, but are encoded as low as 14 Mbps (They do this so they can fit the movie on a single layer Bluray disk instead of the standard dual layer disks.) Another thing to note is that the color 'black' on Bluray is like 'Bass' on an MP3, in that they both require high bit rates. A low bitrate on Bluray will produce a grainy black picture, and on an MP3 a low bitrate will make the bass sound tinny. A great example of this is the movie 'Crash' which looks way better on DVD than that of Bluray.

From my experience, the best Bluray movies to show off your system are the BBC's 'Natural Earth', and 'Doctor who' like 'Planet of the dead.' Dr who is 1080i, but is encoded at the highest bitrate that I have seen on any Bluray movie so far, and looks outstanding.

Good Luck

I need a firmware or software update to play a hddvd in my flatscreen/dvd combo. its an emerson 19inch flat screen model ld195em8

Sorry to say, but a firmware update will not reformat your DVD player into BluRay or HDDVD capabilities.
There is only one way to get your TV to display BluRay DVDs, that is to purchase a BluRay player and connect it to your TV with a HDMI cable, now this will also require your TV to have a HDMI port to connect to, and your TV must be able to display full
1080p resolution,with that said I don't know of a 19" TV that is full 1080p capable,especially not a combo unit.
Good luck !

A DVD plays in "Letterbox" format. To have full screen, the TV settings need to be changed to full screen, or zoom. Found in the TV menu of most TV's.

DVD picture is in Black & White only.

Are you trying to play an NTSC disc in a PAL player, If so,your player has a switch or
on-screen setting to select the output format for NTSC discs,

Or maybe you have connected one of the component outputs (Y, R-Y, or B-Y) of
your DVD player to the composite input of your TV.
