    Sorry max - new to his site and didn't realize I was posting a question. So the problem remains that my computer is slow. One guy suggested I download Advanced Systems Care and C Cleaner - I did that. It seemed to help, but then it started to slow down again. There are long pauses before it loads a page or it will freeze for about 30 seconds before moving on. So i downloaded Smart Defrag and it seems to help in that when i go to a webpage, while it takes about 10 or so seconds to get there, it will actually pop up the site's page rather quickly - so in that sense, its changed. The other problem I have is this red screen. If I hibernate my computer or log off and then log on later, my screen goes red and shows the word COMPAQ and then on next 'page' it'll say "windows resuming" with a black hole in the middle of the red screen. But the black hole is marbled with red lines. So i'm at a loss ...can you help?

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/produ... 1) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port on the Left side of the laptop.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connect... You can use a CRT type of monitor, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable. 2) Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up. Turn the laptop on. By factory default the display should show on the external VGA monitor. IF not; there are at least 3 display options available; A) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY. B) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor. C) External VGA monitor ONLY. Hold the Fn key down, and at the same time tap Once on the F4 key. (The F4 key is the Display Toggle-Over key) No display on external VGA monitor? Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F4 key. Post back in a Comment as to what you see. Plus, is it a Compaq Presario C762NR Notebook PC you are referring to?

  • Treadstone Oct 31, 2012

    yes correct model you are referring to. I will have to review what you said here - I was confused at VGA monitor. Ah, you even provided the wikipedia link. I'll let you know ...

    Shut down your computer, unplug from AC outlet, remove battery, replace battery, plug into AC outlet, re-start. It sounds like when you leave your computer on for a period of time it goes into Hibernation hence the Compaq screen upon waking. I never leave my laptops on when not in use I always shut down, I remove the batteries if I am going to be working at home with a AC outlet.As to the slugish behavior my advice would be run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwar... it's free, do you have a good Anti Virus? If you do run a complete scan, if not try Avast! Free Antivirus http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_... free. There are many things that make a computer slow, How many Start-UP programs are running, look in Task Manager, to see what is using all your resourses. Your laptop has decent specs it shouldn't be "bogging down". In CCLEANER there is a section, look on the left for "TOOLS" and click on it look for the section "STARTUP, What is starting up that you do not need? If you need assistance let me know I'll be happy to assist. By the way I never use Hibernation.

    Max - a few things: I think I"m going crazy! 1. If i have AVAST, do i still need Windows Security Essentials? 2. Is there a way to deactivate a program that is running without having to uninstall? 3. I have one program that keeps showing an error every time i boot up - its the program called the Norton Internet Security. It says that there is an error because its missing a file - well I want to get rid of the entire thing completely but when I go into programs/features to uninstall, it searches through the files as if its going to install - I can't get rid of it. 4. I've unplugged, done the scan with malware, have the AVAST. I'm still working on uninstalling some things but not sure if it should be uninstalled - any pointers?

    1) we need to remove all anti virus! I think this is what is "bogging you system down" your machine has 3 anti virus on it now.. 1 remove Windows Security Essentials in control panel,( I don't know what OS you are using so I can't tell you what to look for in control panel), 2) remove Norton using a Norton Removal Tool found at:https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-s... Run and follow instructions, 3) remove AVAST with Avast removal tool foundhttp://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility, run and follow instructions, 4) Did Malwarebytes find anything? let me know one way or the other. 5) Did CCleaner find any junk when you ran the cleaner? if so delete it. 6) did CCleaner find any Registry errors when you ran it? if so delete them. Important: after completeing these steps RE-BOOT TO RE-SET THE COMPUTER REGISTRY. NOW- WE ARE START OVER AND INSTALLING A FRESH COPY OF ANTI VIRUS 1) GO TO :http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_... DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL AVAST RUN A SCAN. Get back to me when you have completed these steps or have an issue and need assistance.

  • Treadstone Oct 31, 2012

    yeah they are current as far as i know..it updates all the time. I had a friend tell me that it could be the problem with my fan? my fan doesn't seem to be working and therefore the overheating and hot hot air?

    Max - all three virus products deleted and about to install AVAST...so far so good, do i need to get rid of Windows Defender as well?

  • max carson
    max carson Nov 01, 2012

    No let windows defender in, your getting there. Once avast is installed,( MAKE SURE TO UNCHECK ANY TOOLBARS IN TEXT) WHEN DOWNLOADING AVAST, WE DO NOT WANT ANY TOOLBARS , that slows your browser down. Also DOWNLOAD MALWAREBYTES AThttp://www.filehippo.com/download_malwar... RUN BOTH, FULL SCAN, IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME , MAYBE HOURS, Depends on the size of your HDD your specs say 160GB . I will monitor this site , you most likely will find errors in both. delete all errors. Then we will add some clean-up programs. to geyou system in "fighting shape " and light on it's feet!

  • max carson
    max carson Nov 02, 2012

    So you had 4 anti virus, WOW, NO WONDER YOUR COMPUTER WOULD NOT RESPOND, HOW MANY MORE? You will need a AVG REMOVAL TOOL FOUND HERE:http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities. i HAD AN IDEA YOU HAD VIRUSES AND MALWARE , I DON'T KNOW HOW IT WAS RUNNING AT ALL. NO WONDER IT WAS SO HOY THE CPU WAS RUNNING FULL TILT!

  • max carson
    max carson Nov 02, 2012

    ALL ANTI VIRUS HAS TO HAVE A REMOVAL TOOL SUPPLIED FROM THE COMPANY. USING THE WINDOWS UNINSTALLER DOES NOT REMOVE IT ALL, THEREFORE IT CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER ANTI VIRUS ....ONLY ONE ANTI VIRUS TO ONE MACHINE, MALWARE PROGRAMS ARE DIFFERENT, MALWAREBYTES IS ONE OF THE BEST.

  • max carson
    max carson Nov 02, 2012

    AFTER A ANTI VIRUS OR MALWARE SCAN ARE COMPLETE ALWAYS RE-BOOT TO RE-SET AND CLEAR THE ERROR FROM THE REGISTRY.

What is my computer browser and how do i close it.

Your computer browser is the program that you use to connect to the internet. Its called a browser because you use it to "browse" the internet.

Common browsers are programs like Internet Explorer (which is the blue "e" on your desktop) or Mozilla Firefox (which looks like a blue planet wrapped in red flames or wings).

You close a browser by clicking on the red "x" in the upper right hand corner of your screen. If you click on the "-" which is located to the left of the red "x" in the upper right hand corner of your screen while on the internet, this minimizes the browser and puts it on the bottom of your computer screen. You can see which windows are open by looking at the bottom of your computer screen. When windows are minimized, they look like squares and have the name of the page which is open on them displayed for easy reading. To close a browser that is minimized to the bottom of your pc screen, click on it with your mouse and then click on the red "x".

Possibilities:
1. video-card gone bad;
2. video-cable gone bad;
3. video-cable not tightly-connected to CRT;
4. video-cable not tightly-connected to video-card;
5. "red" gun inside CRT gone bad.

Disconnect the video-cable from the computer, and try again to adjust the "red". If red-free, then it's time to responsibly recycle the CRT.

Reconnect & wiggle the video-cable, to see if that induces any "red" onto the CRT.

Connect the CRT to the VGA-output port on a notebook computer, to see if that video-card generates "red" as one of the primary colours.

Give the CRT a strong "whack" on the side, to see if "red" makes an appearance.
