Question about Dell UltraSharp 1701FP 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

Monitor (Dell 1701FP) flickers, flashes and goes black

My Dell 1701FP monitor is acting very weird. After using the monitor for a long time (months) without having any problem occur this suddenly happens: the screen starts to flash and flicker and after doing so for a little while it goes black. If i leave it off for a moment and then restart it it'll do the same thing after a short time and again go black. The strangest thing is that if I leave it and don't use it for a long time, and then later plug it in again, it'll work like a charm again (for, as it seems, a limited period of time). Anyone knows why?

Hello, My name is Richard; I am part of Dells Online Community Outreach group. Solution 1 is good as the inverter may be going out. The inverter lights up the screen for the picture to be displayed, other wise you would only be able to see very dark shadows. In the end it would be a good idea to call our technical support at 1-800-822-8965 and find out if the monitor is still under warrantee. Or you can email me at, place attention Richard in the subject line. We can assist you in determining what the issue is and help apply a solution. Regards, Richard

Just to check - when the screen is black- can you see any image- in its un-illuminated state. To do this look sideways along the screen not straight at it. I suspect this is an inverter problem. Whether or not this is repairable I know not- depending on your local repair facilities Perhaps DELL can suggest a local agent.

How do i test power on a dell flatscreen 1701fp. I have tested the power adapter and it is working and outputting the correct voltage. The monitor itself will not power on, I have disassembled and looked...

Since you cannot power on the monitor with the power switch on the monitor, then it can be the power supply or the logic board, or the inverter has shorted circuits so it makes the power supply go into shutdown mode.
This monitor uses 14vdc 3A power supply, so what you can do is to verify that you do have 14vdc at the DC input jack with monitor in the OFF mode, then try turn on the monitor to see if the 14vdc drops down to lower than 12vdc or so.
The inverter board has fuse also.
I do not have the pictures of the board for this monitor, but if you can post the pictures, then it will help a lot.
Does the inverter board look like this?
At this point I will concentrate why the monitor will not turn on first, you can disconnect the ribbon cables attached to the inverter board and see if the monitor will power up.

I have lost the original power supply for my dell 1701fp monitor. I have a power supply that I think may work as a substitute until I can replace the original. I need to know, what the acceptable voltage...

What ever you use, it must be REGULATED power supply that will maintain 14vdc output, rating at 3A. These regulated power supply can easily maintain the output voltage within +/- 5% with input AC voltage range from 100~240vac.
Linear regulator power supply may not work since it has slow response time to regulate the voltage.

Power on issue

I had the same thing happen recently.
I wish it was better news but It's a Capacitor that's burning out.
For myself, I just grabbed another monitor from my garage but I did look up the problem first and found video's on how to fix the problem.
It requires some soldering and a little talent along those lines.
I have no doubt I could do it, I just didn't feel like doing it then.
At the bottom of this post is one link to a DIY Fix it vid.
Another option is to find a used monitor.
Of course there are sites like E-Bay or Craig's that you could try but there is a recycle site that people give things away and take things on, called (freecycle).
This is a great site, I've used it in both directions many times with no problems.
NOTE: Use common sense.
I recommend that anytime your going to meet someone from the web you don't know that you take someone with you or at the very least tell someone exactly where you going and any other pertinent info.
Here are the 2 links I mentioned
