Question about Power Generators

2 Answers

No power Carl, This generator came to me after I found the owner an AVR board. They still couldn't get it to produce power after installing it. I advised them to "Flash the field". Still nothing. Brought it to me. AVR board has an obvious burn on it, but I want to know what caused it before I get another board. I work on Generac and any Briggs Power Product. I have no info on these Colemans. Need a wiring schematic so I can test the stator and rotor for problems. Generator has less than 10 hours on it.Even with bad AVR board, still produces 190 volts ac on one set of power wires. Nothing on the other set. I can't tell which wire is which. Jerry Hoffman 303-910-9411 chiralysis@evcohs.com

Hi Jerry,
The power wires are usually numbered 11 & 22 (one winding) and 33 & 44 (the other winding) Because it makes 190VAC on one side only I'd suspect that the AVR output got burned trying to force the rotor to make voltage it couldn't sense. If I remember correctly the AVR will have wires 11 & 22 connected to it as the sense input, so if that side of the stator is open or shorted, or if the sense wires got broken the AVR will be mased out trying to get the right voltage.

You don't specify which model this is but some of the manuals are available here.

Regards,
Carl

My coleman 5000 generator with a briggs & stratton engine started just fine after years of colecting dust in the shop. After we let the generator warm up we applied a load and found out there is no...

Without knowing the exact model generator you have, it may not even have an automatic voltage regulator (AVR). Colemans were known for losing what is known as "residual magnetism", especially when sitting for long periods of time without use. This residual magnetism is necessary for exciting the field to produce electricity. Here is what you can try: Plug a 110v drill into one of the 110 outlets. While the engine/generator is running, with an open hand (not fingers wrapped around it) spin the chuck while holding the drill trigger in the run position. Many times this small amount of current that will be produced by spinning the drill motor will restore the residual magnetism and excite the field. Keep in mind that if this works, the drill motor will begin to spin immediately since it is plugged into the outlet. Hope this helps.

Runs good circuit breakers good,no power

I had the same problem with the same generator. It has served me well for 10 years but recently broke. Apparently it the AVR circuit board. A common problem with older generators. The bad news is it's expensive. After much searching I found it Mitsubishi part # KYC031002210. Price, $350.00! Good luck.

    Gererator stops producing power

This sounds like a "flying open" in the rotor. Over time a small part of the wire that winds around the rotor has gotten cracked just enough to open up when it's warm and being pulled on by the force of the rotor spinning. To test this further, take the wires off the brushes and connect an ohm meter across them then run the generator, if you see the ohm meter indicate an open circuit you've found the problem. This can be repaired but it means removing the rotor and finding the weak spot in the winding. You could replace the rotor for a couple of hundred dollars or get a new generator.

    Regards,
    Carl

I have a coleman 5000 that runs fine but it stops producing power after it runs for a couple of minutes.

Same answer as the last time you asked, likely a flying open. If the rotor test proves that your rotor isn't opening up, test the capacitor on brushless models or the voltage regulator board on brush generators.

20KW Guardian Generac does not produce 12 volts to run engine

The problem is that the printed circuit board inside the generator draws a little current from the battery even when the generator is not running. Over the course of a few days this can make the battery weak enough to be unable to get recharged by the built in running charger which results in not enough power to run the electronic governor on the generator. Usually the spark plugs will work even with a fairly low battery.

Most of the Generac generators come with a built in trickle charger that runs off of the transfer switch load terminals. If your built in charger isn't doing the job it's either broken or you have the wrong sort of battery installed in the generator.

    Regards,
    Carl
