You can usually add RAM and a larger hard drive. If you are looking to upgrade your OS, then we'll need to know what model you have.

Ifixit.com has great tear down guides for upgrading your Mac hardware.

How to upgrade my macbook pro to Yosemite

Apple has made this feature free, and fairly simple. You should first make sure you have a backup of your hard drive on an external drive (easiest to complete with the TimeMachine feature of your Macbook Pro).

  • Open the App Store app and select the Featured or Top Charts tab. You can search for Yosemite, although Top Charts will usually list it as #1 in the Top Free apps.

  • Click on the Download button for Yosemite wherever it appears (either in the search list, or in Top Charts). Follow the prompts.

  • Depending on your connection speed and the specs of your macbook pro, the installation will take one to four hours.
    • Of course, you will have to have an Apple ID to download anything from the App Store.
    • If you don't have an Apple ID and don't know how to get one, please ask another question on FIXYA.

I am needing to upgrade the operating system on my Macbook A1138. Right now it is on 10.4.11 and I want to upgrade to 10.5.8 however it does not have an intel processor. How can i do this?

unfortunately any MAC pc/laptop that doesn't have an Intel chip cant be upgraded to 10.5.8.

when apple made the switch from their own processors to intels they had to make a switch from PPC and newer builds of OSX don't come with PPC support.

I am running OS X 10.4.11 and would like to upgrade my operating system?

Please provide more information.
To what would you like to upgrade it?

Since OSX Mavericks was just announced, I'm going to assume that's what you're wanting to upgrade to.

Not all Macs can run Mavericks.

Mavericks Capable Macs

Mavericks, like its predecessor Mountain Lion, requires one of the following Macs with at least 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of available hard drive space:
  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

If your Mac isn't one of the ones listed above, you won't be able to upgrade.

If you have an iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, or Mac mini model that was originally released in Early/Mid 2006, the latest version of Mac OS X your system supports is Snow Leopard.

How much memory can you install onto a macbook I would like to upgrade to 1TB

I do not believe you can upgrade to 1TB on a macbook. It depends on the model macbook you have (how old it is). If it is a 2009-2010 model you can put in 2 4G memory modules for a maximum of 8 MG on the latest macbook pros (2009 -2010). 2008 models take 4 MG max. Here is a good link to look at from Apple which I believe will give you just the answers you are looking for: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1270.
http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/03/26/apple-macbook-pro-1tb-hard-drive-upgrade/ This is an interesting article about a company who will upgrade your MAC harddrive to 1TB. However the maximum memory for newest model Macbooks is, as I said above 8 MB.

Good luck! If you find this helpful please vote or comment!

Macbook pro lock up

Not usually, It depends how much other stuff you are running. You may need a RAM upgrade. Next time it locks up hit "Apple, option, esc" will bring up a task manager, you can close the programs not responding from here. Try closing all programs and then trying your office APPS. If still no good you WILL need a RAM upgrade.
