New Dryer 1 white dryer from dryer hooked to dryer. I have a 4 wire hook up. Manuel says take white from dryer and white from power cord and attach to center. Take red and black and hook to either side. Take green from power cord and hook to outside of dryer where the white use to be. Problem is I did all this and the dryer is smoking. Did I do something wrong or is this common on new dryers???? Should the red or black be on a specific side?
Hello mynexthome,
Sounds like you did everything correctly however it is possible the wall receptacle may be miswired. The white wire is the neutral, black and red are the line feeds ( hot ) and green is ground. If you are sure the receptacle is wired correctly and that the power cord is wired as you say it is, then there may be an internal issue with the dryer..or some packing material was not removed and is burning off. ( make sure the drum can spin freely and you aren't smelling a belt burning) The red and black are normally on either side of the neutral but you should match the color code on the terminal block on the dryer. Hope that helps...
Regards,
Rick
