Cams wont turn after replacing headgasket


you need to start over with the timing process the valves are hitting the pistons because the cams are not in time rotate the pistons off tdc by about 90 degrees counterclockwise and reset the cams then turn the engine to tdc and put it together rotate by hand after installation to be sure it turns freely 2 full revolutions of the crank and all the marks should line back up

Your cam is either not installed correctly or the timing chain is broken. The gear on the cam shaft may not be seated correctly with the Key or the key has sheared off allowing the gear to spin instead of doing it's job.

How to replace a broken timing belt


Daewoo has interference engines in them, so if the timing belt broke while the engine was running, you will need to replace half of the valves which were bent when the pistons crashed into them when the cams stopped turning and the crank shaft continued to turn. Minimum of $700-1000.00 (usually more). If you do it all yourself and the valve guides are not damaged, still at least $400.00 worth of parts to fix. Pull plastic air dams around bottom of engine on front and right side . Support engine with jack. Drain antifreeze from engine and radiator. remove air filter housing and serpentine belt. remove front engine mount. remove cam belt cover. remove broken cam belt and check cam tensioner bearings and idler bearing as well. They are usually bad. Then remove spark plug cover. Remove valve cover. Remove intake from head. remove coil from head. remove heat shield from exhaust manifold then remove manifold from exhaust and from head. remove water hoses and connecting assemblies from side of head and rear of head. remove Cam shaft bearing caps loosening them all evenly so as not to bend cams. remove cams. remove head bolts. remove head. remove valve hydraulic lifters, compress valve springs and remove valve retainers and dissassemble valves. Clean everything very well. Make sure head is not damaged. Remove valve guide seals. install new valve guide seals, new valves. Seat valves with valve grinding compound. clean well. instal valves in reverse order of dissasembly. Before putting head on, make sure number 1 cylinder is at top dead center position. install head using proper torque of 18 ft # in a spiral application rotation from the center outward in a clockwise direction. Then do spiral rotation again tightening bolts each one-quarter turn. Repeat the tightening process two more times only turning the bolts one-quarter turn each time. Use new head bolts. They are designed to stretch in the process of installation and are not to be re-used. Align cams to proper orientation then bolt into place. do not overtorque cam bearing cap bolts. Less than 5 ft # of torque can stretch these bolts. Snug them then tighten them 90 degrees. Then tighten them another 90 degrees (quarter turn). Snug them all then go back and tighten all of them a quater turn, then go back and tighten all of them another quarter turn. Install the cam idler and tensioner and install the cam belt. then install the intake, exhaust and all other items in reverse order of assembly. Do not turn engine over unless you are sure you have the cam belt on with the crank shaft pulley aligned at top dead center and the intake and exhauste pulley marks aligned to their proper marks with the cam belt properly tensioned. You can't be even one tooth off. This must be right before you turn the engine over! Remove spark plugs and turn engine over by hand two rotation clockwise using a wrench on the center bolt of the crank shaft pulley. Check that the timing of cams is still perfect. If not, correct, retension cam belt, double check timing positions again then rotate engine two revolutions. Check cam timing positions again. The timing should not change! The engine should turn over relatively easily. If it feels like it doesn't want to turn, don't force it. You may have the timing off and be pressing a piston against a valve. If you are at this point, then you need to remove cam belt and unbolt cam shafts to release all tension on any of the valves. return the number one cylinder to top dead center position and then reinstall the cams and cam belt. Once it is assembled and in time, then reattatch the rest of the components that were removed in dissassembly. Do this in reverse order of dissassembly. then connect battery and fill radiator fluid. Start car.

remove the inspection cover in the right engine case turn the engine clock wise to no 1 tdc remove the cam chain tensioner line the marks on the inlet cam inlet then a line flush to the head then ex cam line flush to the head torque the bolts in a criss cross 12nm turn engine a full turn check that it all lines up then turn it over by hand to make sure it turns ok

99 ford contour 2.0 dohc timing belt replacement... i have the alignment tool and blanking plug but which way are the cams turned to align?

fm1069500554000x.pngBefore installing tool. If the belt broke turn the engine so the #1 piston is half way up. This way you will not bend the valves while turning cams. If you feel that the cams are very hard to turn or stops turning then turn crank by hand to lower piston away from valve. Then turn the cams clockwise or counter clockwise slow one at a time too the proper slot position for the tool to fit. Once the cam marks are lined up bring the #1 piston to its TDC.

I need a diagram to sincronize the timing belt of my isuzu tropper 3.2 sohc


if this is 6VD1 engine it has single cam gear each head, but is still a 2 cams per head, engine
if belt has broke or you have turned any gear you must remove rocker covers to check positions of camshafts front lobes are in certain spot as well as timming mark on belt driven cam gear to cover
this cam gear is a 3:1 ratio (3 turns of cam gear = 1 turn of cams)

hello
ok to start intsall by putting the proper cams in their proper spots. they should be marked "FR IN" for front intake "FR EX" for front exhaust and so on. the caps should be marked as well. then tighten them down in a crisscross pattern at 15ftlbs. be sure that the cam journals were lubed before install as well. this will prevent siezure. if both cam sprockets were removed, install the front cylinders cam sprockets first. remove the crankshaft timing hole plug on the left side crankcase cover. and the crank bolt access plug as well. turn the crank counter clockwise till the marks FT notch aligns.
install the cam sprockets and cam flanges so that they read as follows. the timing marks FI for intake and FE for exhaust are flush with the valve cover gasket surface outwards opposing. then align the cam bolt holes while lobes are facing upward. you can then turn the crank counterclockwise to install the bolts. then you can remove the cap bolts to install the cam chain guide plate and instll it.
for the rear. turn the crank so that you see the same timing marks as mentioned earlier. with the crank on the FT position. and the cam sprocket marks to the outside flush with the gasket surface.
next turn the crank counter clockwise 3/4 turn or 270 degrees and align the RT mark in the flywheel inspection hole. then you will install the cam sprockets and chain and cam as the same as you did for the front.

How to align timing sprocks on a 1997 z24 chevrole cavalier


You will need 2 5/16 drill bits. There is a 5/16 hole in each cam gear. With the crankshaft 1/8 turn off TDC, turn the cam gears so the hole is down. Insert the drill bit into the hole and move the gear slow until the bits slides into a hole in the rear timing cover. Do this to both cam pulleys. When you have both bits installed, this will lock the cams. Don't turn the cams with the crank at TDC, It will bend valves. Once you have the cams locked, turn the crank 1/8 of a turn back to TDC. Don't go the other way. The TDC mark on the crank should be a dot on the gear and a arrow on the rear timing cover. Then after everything is lined up, Install the chain,guides and tensioner. After everything is installed, Turn the crank two revolutions, and line the crank back up to TDC. If the timing is right, you should be able to insert the drill bits in each cam gear. Hope this helps.
