Connect the hard drive to the computer via USB cable.Open the "Start" menu, right click "Computer," select "Manage." Select "Storage," then "Disk Management."Right click the partition you wish to split on the USB drive, select "Shrink Volume." Enter the amount of megabytes by which to shrink the drive. This is the amount of space that will be available to create the second partition.Click "Shrink." The partition will be shrunk, resulting in "Unallocated Space." Right click the unallocated space, select "New Simple Volume." Enter a name for the second partition, the desired size and file system format. Click "Next," then "Finish." The result will be two partitions on the USB hard drive.

Creating partitions on USB drives is useful for larger drives or for keeping data organized.

It also allows one drive to be used for multiple purposes, such as having a partition to store data that is accessed often and another partition for backup.

With the new ReadyBoost feature of Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems, as well as with various server operating systems, you can create a partition on many external drives to use for a virtual memory swap file location, speeding up the computer for many memory-intensive tasks or for systems that are short on RAM.

Back up any data currently located on the drive prior to creating, deleting or changing partition size or otherwise attempting to configure the USB drive.

Open "Computer Management" under the "Administrative Tools" section of the Control Panel. Click on "Disk Management" to display a list of drives and their current partitions.

Right-click on the drive and choose "Extend Volume" to make the partition larger using available space on the drive; "Shrink Volume" to reduce the size of the partition, freeing up space on the drive; or "Delete Partition" to remove all partition information and to create fresh partitions on the drive.

Right-click on the free space on the drive and choose "New Simple Volume" if the existing partition has been deleted.

Click "Next" and then enter the desired size of the first volume on this disk.

Choose to assign a drive letter, assign the partition to its own folder on an NTFS volume or not to assign a letter or assign the partition to a folder if the drive is going to be used on a different system.

Click "Next" to display the format dialog screen and choose to format the drive using the default settings.

Give the volume a name and click "Next" again to review all of the chosen settings.

Then click on "Finish" to begin the format process.

Repeat the partition creation steps for as many new partitions as are desired on the drive.

Hope this helps

SOURCE: store jet transcend 160gb not detected

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most portable / external hard drives (though not always)
A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability
2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)
3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.
4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply
Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.
5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again.
If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues carry on reading.
Go to your control panel and then administrative tools, select Computer Management.
Now select Disk Management and expand the window.
Your drive should be listed here, if not then you need to check your computer hardware has not got any issues before proceeding.
If your drive is listed and says healthy then right click on it an select Properties, click Tools and then Error Checking, Check now, tick the two boxes and then Start.
This will attempt to fix most minor / common errors on the drive. It may also ask you to restart which is fine. Allow it to finish its work or you could corrupt the drive. If all went well you should be able to use it normally again.
If you drive was listed but did NOT say healthy then right click and select Format. Choose NTFS as the file system and do not tick any boxes you do NOT want quick format. Again start and let it do its thing. When it is done restart your computer and you should be good to go.
If you still have problems with the drive you might want to look at other areas.

SOURCE: My PC is unable to read my transcend store jet 2.5

I encountered the same problem before and was able to track it down to the power needs of the drive.
USB 2.0 standard ports are required to deliver 100mA by default and up to 500mA on request by a connected device. Some older (USB1.x) hubs can deliver a maximum of 50mA only which is not sufficient for the harddrive.
My StoreJet as a fix came with a special Y-connector cable (two USB connectors go into PC, one into the connector at the HD) to double the available power. I have also seen cables with an extra power connector built inside the plug that goes into the PC side. However, this is a crude fix in violation of USB standards and I cannot condone the use of such cables.

A separate power connector is present at the back panel of the drive, but it came without a power supply included. I got myself a standard 5V/500mA universal power supply (check connector jack size and polarity, outside sleeve is ground, inside is +5V DC).

Alternatively an external USB2.0 hub can be used but beware: if it does not come with an external power supply, its not USB2.0 compliant --- some cheap companies spare themselves of the extra costs for this required part.

Another thing: the mini USB connector in the back panel of the HD case is mechanically fragile and not soldered well to the controller PCB. It has a tendency to loose electrical connection.
I had to fix the soldering on two of these HDs already; doing so yourself is recommended only if you have some experience in using a fine electronics soldering iron --- otherwise have a repair shop fix it for you.

SOURCE: Transcend 500 GB External HDD

Your external HDD may be corrupted. Recover the data before you use it.

First things first: STOP using the external hard dive that you want to recover data from in case you may quite possibly ruin your chances of data recovery.

Then Recommend you have a try of Wondershare Data Recovery, a data recovery program with both Windows and Mac versions provided. It should help you. Get the related versions here,

Data Recovery Windows (for Windows)
Data Recovery Mac (for Apple Mac OS)

Remember - Do NOT try & write anything back to your hard drive until you can recover your data safely!

How to make dual boot with window xp vista and windows 7

Dual booting Windows is the most challenging of the three options; however, making it work can be very rewarding. The process of creating a dual boot environment differs from Windows Vista to XP. Please follow the instructions according to which version of Windows you are currently using.
To run two operating systems on your computer, you will need to add a second partition. If you are not familiar with adding a partition, you can learn how in this section. Please note: each operating system will be able to see the other partition; thus, you can share files between them.

Dual Boot with window x and windows 7

You will need third party software to create a second partition for Windows 7; once you have created the partition, you can install Windows 7 on it.

Create a New Partition (Vista)

Click the Start button, right click Computer, and clickManage

In the left pane, click Disk Management

Now create a new partition by shrinking a previous volume so you can use the newly created space. Right click on the partition and clickShrink Volume.

Now right click the free space and click New Simple Volume…
Specify the volume size and click Next

Format the drive as NTFS, give it a label, and click Next

Power on your computer, insert the Windows 7 DVD, and restart your computer

Press the necessary key to initiate booting from your DVD (usually Esc or F12.)

Windows will now load the installation files.

Click Install now
Your computer will restart several times during the process as it configures itself and installs updates Be sure to leave the DVD in the drive and let Windows take care of itself.

Memory (RAM) – 1.25 GB required, 2 GB memory recommended.
Recommended 15 GB hard disk space per virtual Windows environment.
NB: Windows XP Mode is only available in Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate.

The chances are that the portable drive is drawing more current fom the USB port then the port can supply. The current limitations on the USB ports are controlled electronically and if anything is connectedthat attempts to draw more power then the port can safely supply, the port is shut down.
You may have to use a USB power injector which you plug into the laptop and then plug the drive into that.

You will need to format the disk so the file structure can be read by your operating system. Formating the disk will wipe all data from the disk but will only need to be done once.

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Click Properties, and check formatting. I had one of those, and it was FAT32, so it will only except a a certain size of files. All you need to do is right click on it and select format. This could take a while.
