    Usually caused by laptop is dirty inside. Plus Thermal Paste may be dried up. Do you wish to disassemble to clean, and apply fresh new Thermal Paste? Post back in a Comment. Regards, joecoolvette

    Hi, thanks for your reply, but it's a wellknown issue. Is a problem in the southbridge. A temporary fix is to put something on this chip so when is assembled again this causes pressure. But is not definitive. I found on the net some info about this but it seems that the only answer is to change the Mainboard or pay a lot for reballing the chip....

I am aware of the HP Pavilion dv2000 series, Pavilion dv6000 series, and Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC's, has a problem with inadequate cooling for the graphics chipset.

Surface area of heatsink plate attached to Cooling Tube, is too small.
Also A few other model series of HP's, and Compaq's.

But was not aware of the Pavilion dv4000 series has this defect in design.

For the dv2000 series, dv6000 series, and dv9000 series, the heatsink plate on the Cooling Tube, is too small in surface area,

Pavilion dv6000 series - Fan Assembly/Heatsink assembly,

Note all the way to the right. Note the Tri setting of the 3 'screw arms', and the rectangle shape in the center. (Rectangular copper plate with residual thermal paste still on it)

THAT rectangular plate sits on top of the Processor.
Go to the left, and in-between it, and the Fan Assembly, is another small rectangular shape. Vertically placed compared to the Processor heatsink plate, and formed from the aluminum of the Cooling Tube brace.

Inadequate in surface area.

Now here is a Thermal Cooling Module for a Pavilion dv4000 series,

The Processor sits on the Bottom of the motherboard. Heatsink copper plate that you see removes, and is accessed through a panel on the bottom of the laptop.

The GPU, or graphics chipset, sits on Top of the motherboard. It is covered by the thin metal System Board Static Shield. (Plate)

THAT, is it's Heatsink plate.

Note what looks to be a white rectangular label, in the center of the motherboard. Vertically placed.
Note the Green square object to the left of it. Has a blackish smaller rectangle in the center.
(GPU mounted to the graphics chipset's, green circuit board)

Nvidia GeForce Go 6100, or GeForce Go 6150. (Code name C51M)

That is for models that have Discrete Graphics.

One's that have Integrated Graphics use Intel GMA 900, which is incorporated in the Intel 915 series motherboard chipset.

Top View again, only showing the System Board Static Shield, mounted this time,

Pretty sure that large surface area of the System Board (Static) Shield, is VERY adequate to cool the graphics chipset.

BGA surface mount:

Ball Grid Array surface mount.
To explain the BGA surface mount;

Compare to an older Intel Pentium 4 processor, that uses a Socket 478 processor socket,

The processor has 478 contact pins on the bottom.
The processor socket has 478 matching socket holes.

With a BGA surface mount there are no contact pins, nor socket holes on the motherboard.
In place of the contact pins are Solder Balls.
In place of the socket holes are matching Copper Pads.
(The Copper Pads are gold plated )

The chipset, (Graphics chipset, or GPU, in this case), is set down on the motherboard, with the Solder Balls lining up on the matching Copper Pads.
Heat is then applied at a specific temperature, and length of time.

This action partially melts the Solder Balls, and solders the graphics chipset to the Copper Pads.
Which of course solders it to the motherboard.

With constant repeated overheating of the graphics chipset, the solder connections (Solder Joints), that were made start to partially melt.
When the laptop cools down again from being turned off, the solder joints now re-solidify, and this causes Cold Solder Joints.

Cold solder joints create a poor contact. Poor contact of graphics chipset TO motherboard.

To -> Re-ball is to remove all said solder that is left on the graphics chipset, and reapply each Solder Ball again.
Very doubtful this needs to be done, and the term Re-ball is flipped off the ****** of those who really do NOT know what the h3ll, they are talking about.
Makes it tough for those who do not know the technology, and are trying to learn.

Reflow is what is meant.

Observe a BGA Rework Station in action, and learn more about Solder Balls, Copper Pads, and the BGA surface mount technology,

The thermal paste solution used are Thermal Pads.
One on top of the Processor, and one on top of the graphics chipset.
These are to be peeled off, and flown at the cat.
They are -> JUNK, and cannot be reused anyway.

The top of the Processor, top of the GPU on the graphics chipset, and bottom of both small heatsink plates attached to the Cooling Tube; are to be THOROUGHLY cleaned, and new, fresh Thermal Paste is PROPERLY applied.

I use an old credit card to scrape as much old Thermal Pad residue off, that I can, then follow with LOTS of Q-tips dipped in Isopropyl Alcohol.

(91 percent is best, but 70 percent will do. I do NOT recommend 50 percent. 50 percent WATER, and 50 percent Alcohol)

Isopropyl alcohol is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE!
Use in a WELL ventilated area with NO sparks or flames present!

I am still of the mind that the inside of the laptop needs to be cleaned, Thermal Pads removed, and fresh, new Thermal Paste applied.

Let's say I am wrong.
If there is inadequate cooling for the graphics chipset, buying a replacement motherboard just puts you back at square 1.
Sooner, or later the graphics chipset will overheat again, and the problem will re-occur.

If the above holds true you need to increase the cooling surface area, for the graphics chipset.

Just for edification, and Not advertising;
This is one tech's solution for the HP Pavilion dv2000 series, dv6000 series, and dv9000 series of Notebook PC's;

WEAR an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source.
A Processor is the MOST susceptible hardware component to Static shock.
Average cost is around $3 to $6.

I connect to an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of an open, empty desktop computer case.
I feel an Anti-Static mat is unwarranted.
You can also set a large metal serving tray (Unpainted), on the table you are working on, and connect to it.
Or a large metal knickknack. (Unpainted)

Thought I was just 'another pretty face', huh? Lol!

    Read up on the Southbridge chip of the motherboard chipset, 'issue'. I see what you are referring to. One it looks as though the Southbridge chip is inadequately cooled, from what is stated. There also seems to be an issue with a circuit trace on the motherboard. (Circuit Trace is also known as Signal Trace. Think very flat thin copper wires on the motherboard) The Intel Southbridge chip used is an Intel ICH6, or part number Intel 82801FB. Black square chipset seen in the middle/right. Concur; there is no cooling solution other than air flow from the Fan Assembly. Suggest adding cooling surface area to the chipset, and fortify the issue with the circuit trace.

    I'd say you have a disk going bad. Get it replaced under warranty or you are probably looking at a new system.

    Installed new mother board to hp dv4000 laptop all went well but after 10 min ish the computer freezes and has to be forced to shut down like it is getting hot and will not reboot with the display working...

    is that an original mobo from the manufacturer? if not or yes i think one of the chips might be getting burnt due to a short circuit...claim a warranty repair or replacement... it might be one of the voltage controller chips or capacitors that was burnt... might b a dust issue too

    HP Pavilion dv4000 motherboard freezing

    There is a chip under the pc card cage that gets cold solder points and ends up breaking loose. The motherboard will need to go on a special rig to be resoldered. It would be faster to just purchase another motherboard on Ebay and install it. The motherboard part number is located in the Ram memory compartment. There are repair firms out there that are capable of repairing these but I am unsure of what the cost would be. I will include a service manual link below to guide you in the disassembly of the laptop.

    Had the same problem... push on the bottom left hand corner of the computer and see if that makes it unfreeze if so... you have a bad coldsolder issue on the MOBO.. get it replaced or serviced... its a PITA (pain in the ***)

    make sure you got the right drivers for your unit... specially if your using operating systems that exactly supports that drivers you 've loaded with...
