This model will or may have the soft reset: power on, menu 1,2,3 enter.

It will have a hard reset that requires a 4 digit number code as well that is available only from Mitsubishi or a authorized service center---they do not want that made public as one wrong move......

I have Mitsubishi dlp WD60638. It will not turn on at all. There are no lights blinking and no sound is coming from the tv. Any ideas, or should I just purchase a new one.

This sounds like you have blown the fuse protecting the power supply. The cost of analyzing and fixing the problem will go a long way towards a new TV. The newest LED-backlit LCD sets with local dimming are much better than the older projection TVs. They are brighter, sharper, and provide better blacks. I know which way I would go.

Hear a pop like a firecracker and then no picture

It is likely that the bulb has failed. The bulb can be removed as an assembly from the rear of the unit. Carefully inspect the lamp and confirm that the glass bulb has failed. the pop could be the bulb fracturing. Careful for broken glass. Suggest that you buy a direct manufacturing equivalent. I have found they are the brightest.

.
\The link is from the owners manual providing the instructions to replace lamp.

Have a wd60638 changed the lamp because old one busted now the TV works fine for about 3-5 minutes starts to hum and a clicking sound and pictures begins to flicker with colors going in and out

normally no bulb will bust ever unless you have oil on the lamp. sooo , it got too hot then. even if the fans turning its not putting out.
check the exhaust it should blow a lot of air past the lamp.
