Re: I can't get the ink to fit into the slots.
If you have purchased the printer with the ink cartridge then insert the ink cartridges with the GOLD(contacts) facing towards the printer. If you are replacing the ink cartridges, then you must make sure that cartridge numbers are the same as the empty ones.

This error message usually happen if the cartridge is not properly seated or the copper-colored electrical contacts have problem. Check this website for proper cleaning and installing ink cartridge. If the problem is resolve try replacing the ink cartridges.
It's one or two things. First make sure there is nothing stuck in the printer. Such as, a paper clip, coins, or even a staple. Make sure you take all the ink cartridges out of the printer. Shake the printer and see if anything falls out. Good luck!
Check the ink levels by opening the HP Solution Center. Click on "Settings." Click on "Toolbox." Click on "Services." Click on "Service this device." Click on "Estimated Ink Levels." A graphic will appear showing the estimated ink level in each cartridge.
Verify that the unit is on. Open the print cartridge door allowing the print carriage to move to the far right side of the unit. Once the print carriage has stopped, lightly press down on a print cartridge to release it. Pull the print cartridge toward you out of its slot. To replace the tri-color print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the slot on the left. To replace the black or photo print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the slot on the right. Place the cartridge in a plastic bag as it may still contain some residual ink and may leak.
Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging. Remove the plastic tape by using the pull tab, being careful to not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles under tape.
Slide the new print cartridge forward into the empty slot. Gently push the upper part of the print cartridge until it clicks into place. The tri-color print cartridge fits into the left slot. The black or photo print cartridge fits into the right slot.
Close the print cartridge door. If the print cartridge alignment sheet prints, load it on the left front corner of the scanner glass with the top of the page to the left. Verify that there is plain paper loaded in the input tray, and then press the "Scan" button to align the printer.
This is because printer and scanner are connected together. The printer need both cartridges installed to initialized and then initialized the scanner.Just put the missing cartridge and problem will solve.
