Hobart model a200t not working propery. Just hums when turned on

When turned on, the mixer just hums, and the gears don't move. I have looked on the Hobart website, but their troubleshooting guide is unavailable. Does anyone know what the problem might be with the mixer, or can anyone tell me where to find a free troubleshooting guide? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

We took the front cover off, and the motor is not spinning. One day we turned it on, and it just hummed. That said, do you think a bad capacitor is the problem?

  • aplatson Jan 04, 2009

Or, would this occur if the motor needs to be rewound?

  • aplatson Jan 04, 2009

Serial number is 11-334-594. The number below that is 19205. I'm not sure what the number means. It is a one-piece back cover. I believe it is a mechanical capacitor.

  • aplatson Jan 04, 2009

We have the back cover off, and there is a fiber plate fastened to the cover with 3 yellow wires attached. Everything looks clean and in good shape. Nothing smells burnt. A heavy shaft, which could be the rotor and can be taken completely out, slides back out of the assembly with the worm gear on the inside end. The worm gear is covered with grease and appears to be in good shape. Would the capacitor be in between the fiber plate and the cover itself? And, would the capacitor cause the problem we are having? Or possibly the relay?

We will check on that tomorrow and get back to you. Thanks!

Was this mixer working before? If so what were the circumstances under which it broke? Is it doing the same thing in all gear selections. ricardok45.

Take top front cover off see if motor is spinning when turned on? hum can come when motor is running or transmision jammed or motor has issue like capsitor bad or start switch inside motor bad.

what ever you do unplug it don't let it hum. what kind of motor is on it hobart early ones had brush motors then mechanacl capacitor start thyen electronic start. look in back cover does it have removable corners ? or is it a one peice back cover? if you see a capacitor or brushes is next ? look at the data plate does it have a ML# or Spec #

  • doobo67 Jan 04, 2009

most cases the motor will be ok just don't run it or try to until you figure issue out.

  • doobo67 Jan 04, 2009

yes that serial number is for sure not a brush motor to get the back off take the round cap with four screws of first. there is two nuts one locks to the other you can get the first one off with a punch tap conter clock wise with a hammer also take out a big round spacer before you tap its in front of the bearing. then tap the back nut same way. then the washer off. then take the four screws on all four corners and when out pull on the cover I use the cord strinfelief it should pop off be carefu its hooked up to wires remove it but leave wires conneted so you know where they go. if it has a switch it will be a brown fiber piece with contact on one end. sheck that contact. make sure it is two pints like on a car they do burn off. make sure the copper sping load is not broke. then look at the cap see if it has black stuff ozzing out smell it it will smell if its blown. then tell be what you see when you get this far

the cpacitor is facined to the back of the plate with the fiber switch its a big black tube shape . there should be tow 7/16" bolts hoding the metal braket with the switch. also on the rotor is a rotating part with a balck plastic round thin with two springs on it this is cetrifical operated when motor stats it operated switch it moves away from switch. what color are the winding shuld be brown or copper color no dark black. look at the cap tak it off and see if it has black stuff ozzing out of the top where wires hook on it.

Hobart A200 won't start

If the gearing is all free to move and you replaced the motor capacitor that only leaves the motor. If you can remove the motor and test it "out of the gearing" that would confirm it. You have wired the capacitor correctly and used the correct one? Just asking! Are you sure the gearing isn't jammed up?

Hi, I have a used Hobart A200T and the bowl yoke piece moves up and down slightly, even under a light load. It makes an annoying clanking noise. It's as if a spring somewhere is looser than it should be....

You may be correct about a loose spring. Check this:

Carefully lay the mixer on its back side to access the bottom of the mixer. Remove the cover screen covering the opening in the bottom of the mixer. Using an extension and appropriate socket, be sure the nut of the bowl lift rod is snug, slightly compressing the spring of the bowl lift rod.

Hi, it is hard to determine exactly what the problem is without seeing it, however, that mixer usually uses a capacitor to help start the motor, and a switch, or relay, that are in the back of the unit. You probably will not find any troubleshooting guide, Hobart does not give up information easily. You can take it to an electric motor repair shop, and they will easily be able to tell which of those is the problem, and will be reasonable in price. Your other option is to contact Hobart locally for service assistance. Maybe one of the other Hobart techs here can help you out more.

Sound like bearings

Ist check your agitator shaft for looseness. the shaft you put the beater on. wiggle side to side. if tight no play. If in first its quiet but you can here a grumble under load but second gets louder. and third even louder. If the shaft is tight. your gears down there are warn. you can take that all off with the two nuts underneath. and check the grease on the gears but even with new grease on them it most likely stay loud. grease it with hobart grease from your loacal hobart for the A-200 planitary not the transmision they also fve grease for Trans. if you can take the noise run it that way if not decide which arm & leg you want to give hobart for new gears.

A200T mixer

On the bottom of the planitary the part where you put the beater. there is two nuts. one lookes like a Acorn nut and a thin one above it. By the book the top thin one should be finger tight. Not wrench tight. you need a thin wall 3/4" wrench you hold the thin nut with iot and tighten up the bottom acorn up to the thin one and they lack against each other so not to come losse .on some mixers this thin nut tightend down will mess with older parts and bind the centersahft parts.

Mixer has just stopped

On the newer A200s, there is a reed switch behind the solid portion of the bowl gaurd. On the cage portion there is a magnet embedded in a plastic holder. Without it, the mixer won't run.
