Problem with dvd/vcr remote

My Sony DVD/VCR remote will not allow me to tape a program , it has been working consistently for several months and just stopped the other day. It will allow me to change channels use the volume and every other function but both the set up and subtitle/timer buttons do nothing. I have changed the batteries and unplugged the machine hoping it would reset itself. Any ideas??
