Volume control problem on Bose Acoustimass 900 Speaker System

I have a Bose Acousticmass 900 speaker system which is about 10 years old. when I played a movie or a muscic CD, the volume would suddenly turn up loud in the middle of playing and I couldn't lower the volume when I used the volume control knob. When I waited a couple of days, this problem would disappear for a short while, but the volume control problem will appear again. I would appreciate very much if you can tell me how to fix it. Many thanks!

I read your answer but I am not clear. You mentioned a switch and a box behind the volume dial that need to be replaced. Do you mean they are two separate items or they are the same? Could you please clarify. If the switch or box is bad, how come the volume control would work fine for a short while. Thanks!

Welcome to Fixya! This is the Volume switch Behind the Dial. Usually repaired by an Authorized Repair Shop. There is a Box behind the Volume Dial that needs to be Replaced.

That was My Bad! I meant it as 1 Box. Sorry man! Working fine for a While Question, Sometimes they will "Catch" and work for a While But, They will ALWAYS Stop Working Just when you think that it is OK. Let me Know! There are small Gears inside the Box Or "Switch" that May get a Jolt of Power Occasionally and work for a While.

Please check if the AC cord of Acoustimass module has a good connection to AC outlet, also check all the connections specially the cable that goes to the system control unit jack, for your reference in the link below you can see and download the manual of your Bose system:

Is the subwoofer from the Bose acoustimass 10 series IV Home Entertainment Speaker System a power sub?

The entire speaker system is passive. That is, it requires amplification for each channel.

From the manual: "Compatible with A/V receivers rated from 10 to 200 watts per front channel and 10 to 100 watts per rear channel; rated from 4 to 8 ohms".

Better sound through bose speakers?

If you have the money to plunk down for a Bose Acoustimass home theater speaker system, I'm sure you will be quite pleased. Of course, as you indicated, appropriate placement of the speakers is important. Still, I'm sure you will find that a properly placed Bose Acoustimass speaker system will fill your room with high quality sound, substantially better than Onkyo's stock speakers placed equally well.

I own a Technics home theater system, which I initially purchased to use in my family room. Yet, when I listened to a Bose Lifestyle system (powered by Bose Acoustimass speakers), I could have nothing less. The Bose system went in the family room, where everyone could enjoy it. I put the Technics system in the bedroom, where it is rarely used.

The entire 5.1 amplification system, in the Bose Lifestyle 35, is actually part of the Bose Acoustimass (subwoofer) module. The RJ-45 (network type) connector passes a low-voltage signal from the console to the Acoustimass module. If you were to hack the connection, and plug the speaker outputs of a 5.1 receiver to the RJ-45 socket on the Acoustimass module, you would blow the amplifier.

If you are really itching to replace the Bose Lifestyle 35 console with a regular 5.1 receiver, I strongly suggest you sell your Bose system, and purchase a Bose speaker system, such as the Acoustimass 10 Home Theater Speaker System, which is made for use with a standard 5.1 surround sound receiver.

Problem connecting Onkyo Amplifier to Bose Accoustimass speaker system

This is probably correct as modern equipment uses electronic volume controls rather than potential dividers the range is normally biased towards the bottom end so there is lots of the range that is quiet and a smaller part that is loud.

Unless you find that at the top of the volume range the system does not seem to be loud then it is probably correct. It is not uncommon for modern equipment to clip at 80 / 90% of the volume range. Where as old style equipment with volume pots used to clip at arround 30% of the volume range as it gave the apperance there was loads of extra volume available. In fact all that happened if you turned it up louder was it clipped more and more.

Regards,
Andrew
