Question about Briggs Garden

1 Answer

Replaced stop switch and still won't shut off.

Briggs engine numbers 10H902, 0113, E1, 05091255

New stop switch won't move when lever is turned to stop position. Old stop switch tried to fall out when lever is turned to stop position. Engine will not shut off without pulling plug wire.

This engine is on an older Craftsman power washer.

Hi

When lever is turned to stop position look under the levers" support and see if there is established a conection with the wire from the coil wich kills the running engine. Also check the conductivity of that wire.

How do I lower a over raving 24hp over head valve briggs and Stratton motor

take the rod from the governor lever to carby off and see if you can move the governor lever freely or if it lees like it is not in the governor weights and cog groove
is the governor lever moving against the spring outside the crankcase
I suspect that you may not have put the lever end in the gear slot properly when reassembling the motor and the lever is not shutting the throttle plate as it should to stop over rpms
hopefully you did it right and it is the location on the lever on the shaft outside that requires repositioning

Briggs & Stratton 19hp opposed twin platinum engine keeps surging with the choke off. But with the choke about 3/4 closed runs great. Cleaned carburetor and adjusted it and governor a little. Same way

when this is running at it's best, look closely at the Levers as you move them slowly and see all that's affected by this movement look for bent Levers and if you can adjust-adjust. careful you don't break anything as you might try to bend back the Lever.., Don't adjust anything yet!, Pay close attention to adjustable ways that can be made on the Levers. And adjust accordingly. Make very small positions/turns and let engine settle into its new revolutions (Running) might take a few minutes.
Thanks, hope it helps.

My zx7r, ive got no Ignition or Neutral light, I have replaced the ignitor unit, the clutch switch, the battery, the side stand switch, the junction box, the fuel pump and still no ignition? I took off my...

Hi, Anonymous the ignition circuit cut-off system comprising of the side stand switch, clutch switch and neutral switch has the following functions:
a. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is up, but the clutch lever is not pulled.
b. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the clutch lever is pulled, but the side stand is still down.
c. It cuts the running engine when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is moved down.
Periodically check the operation of the ignition circuit cut-off system according to the following tests.
With the engine turned off:
1. Move the side stand down.
2. Make sure that the engine stop switch is set to "RUN"
3. Turn the key to "ON".
4. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
5. Push the start switch if the engine does not start the neutral switch may be faulty.
With the engine still running:
6. Move the side stand up.
7. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
8. Shift the transmission into gear.
9. Move the side stand down if the engine does not stall you may have a faulty side stand switch.
After the engine has stalled:
10. Move the side stand up.
11. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
12. Push the start switch if the engine does not start you may have a faulty clutch switch.
This check is most reliable if performed with a warmed-up engine.

Vanguard Briggs & Stratton won't shut down

Your kill wire from the switch to the coil is bad, disconnected or connections dirty...or switch is bad...try disconnecting the kill wire on the coil and using a jumper ground the coil directly to the engine or frame it should shut down if it does it is the wire or switch do the same at the switch if it shuts down it is the switch..if not the wire has a break..good luck..

From your description it seems that the starter is not engaging to turn over the engine. First ensure all the connections of the thicker cables to the battery, starter and tractor frame are clean and tight. If starter motor is turning but still not engaging it will mean that the pinion on the starter motor is binding on the shaft. You can buy a new starter pinion gear from your local B & S agent.
To replace pinion, remove starter motor from engine, remove old pinion and put on new one and reattach starter to engine. If fuel & spark are right you should be up amd running.

Engine shuts off when any drive gear is engauged

I hope you have fixed this by now. If you haven't It is possible that the ROS is malfunctioning. The tractor is equipped with a reverse operation system which allows the tractor to mow while backing up. It might be that the wiring in the switch or the shifter has become disconnected or broken.

For reference, the manual says this:

USING THE REVERSE OPERATION SYSTEM -

• Move motion control lever to neutral (N) position.

• With engine running, turn ignition key counterclockwise

to ROS "ON" position.

• Look down and behind before and while backing.

• Slowly move motion control lever to reverse (R) po si tion

to start movement.

• When use of the ROS is no longer needed, turn the
ignition key clockwise to engine "ON" position

Replaced stop switch and it still won't shut off!

While attending college, I worked at a tool rental center and learned many tips and tricks from the mechanics. The problem that we heard the most from customers was that the machine would not start. Your your machine at least starts and runs fine, however will not shut down with the factory kill switch. Many times when replacing the mag. (spark coil) the kill wire would rub against the flywheel and break or over time the conductor wire will break inside the insulation. If you kill switch only has one wire, then all the kill switch does is short the mag to ground. Simple test is to remove spark plug, re-connect wire to plug, touch plug to engine and pull rope to observe spark, then short the tab on the magnito to ground, should be no spark. If you still have spark, coil is defective however good enough to run engine. Kill with choke or pull wire. If no spark with test, make new wire from tab of coil to kill switch or any switch that will short tab to ground. Good Luck
