I got the same problem today when I did a long ride in continuous rain. The unit shuts down if I press the mode button. None of the other buttons work.

Contrary to the advertising, this unit is NOT waterproof. I booked mine in with Garmin for repair after taking a drink of saltwater whilst on the deck of my kayak. As soon as I advised them of the issue, they advised that it is not waterproof and offered me a very sharp price on a replacement.

I've just gotten back from a ride in extremely bad weather. I noticed when I was out the screen went blank, though if I pressed the key in the top left, the backlight would turn on. After getting back home and having the unit dry out for a while, when powering on if I press the 'mode' key the unit instantly powers off. The 'up' 'enter' and 'down' keys are non responsive. To resolve, I pressed the "start stop" key, and then the 'lap/reset' key, and then power the unit off. After doing this and powering back on again, the unit was completely functional once more.

I had the same problem after a rainstorm. Although the unit is supposed to be waterproof, it was not. Garmin replaced the unit when the mist did not clear after a few weeks, and the unit never worked after that.

Used my garmin edge 305 today on the ride, it worked fine, powered off after the ride. Got home turned on to review my stats and then powered off and went to upload and wouldn't upload, so tried to turn it...

Edge 205 or 305 often crash, then impossible to power on again.

Here is the way to reset the Garmin edge :

Soft reset : hold mode and lap/reset buttons for 10 seconds
Hard reset : device should be powered down, hold start and mode buttons for 3 seconds then pulse press the lap/reset button.

After soft reset, you need to hold start button for up to 10 secs before it starts.

After hard reset, you will loose all your data, including profiles.

Just to be sure ...

Now if this does not work, you should check battery. Does the device charge when plugged on PC ?
If it does not, either battery is out of order or the contacts inside the device re broken. This may happen if device is used in continuous vibrating environment like mountain bike.

Changing battery or fixing contacts issue is explained there :

My Edge 305s GPS is not working. Everything else runs perfectly fine, it just will not acquire any satellites. I tried a soft reset. It won't let me hard reset though.

Hard reset is not very easy, so follow carefully instructions above.

Now simple advice, did you check in your parameters that the GPS transceiver is turned on ?
There is a mode with GPS off, don't ask why ...
Refer to your manual to find the menu.

Garmin Edge 305 won't acquire satellite signals

If the option of working without GPS receiver enabled is turned off, then it may be a real damage.

Only thing is to check this option.
