Question about Sewing Machines

Bernina 830 stopped running

A Bernina 830 sewing machine was given to me and had not been used in quite some time. I threaded it and started it up to see if it still worked and everything was running smoothly, then it suddenly stopped, but the light still worked. Manually moving the needle also still worked smoothly. It suddenly began to work then stopped again. I'm going to clean it and oil it, but I was wondering if there may be a more serious problem? Thanks for your help.

If it's been setting for a long time, it needs some good ol' TLC (cleaning and oiling).

I cant get my stitch Width Zig zag knob to turn om my bernina record 930. Any one have this problem?

Most likely because your machine has not been serviced (oiled & cleaned) in a long time and the old oil has turned to glue and seized. This is probably the most common problem with mechanical sewing machines. A mechanical sewing machine should be regularly maintained..ie every 40 hours of sewing use or at least every six months when not in use. You may want to take it to a Bernina service technician. Ask for a bottle of Bernina oil for CB hook machines and ask if they will show you how to oil it.

My Bernina 830 sewing machine will not sew any of the decorative stitches.

Is this the vintage 830 record, or the new electronic model?
If it's the Record, flip the top open, and oil all metal-to-metal. Run for a full minute, oil again, and run another minute. It should start to work once the oil has been worked in.

I Have a bernina 830 and the foot doesn't come down or up how do I get it working again?

Have you followed the maintence standards (oil schedule). If not
that may be the issue. A wild guess (at least this was the issue
recently with wife's older White machine. The foot lever was catching on the thread cutter device. Otherwise, perhaps a screw has come loose somewhere in the lever and or foot. Good luck. Double check your manual troubleshooter section.

You may need some cleaning, oiling or maintenance?
Tips for cleaning and maintenance:

Oil the hook after having used the content of 3 to 4 bobbins. The machine
screen will display a reminder

Increasing noise of the motor and/or irregular
stitch formation can also be an indication that oiling is necessary

Remove any lint from the hook and the bobbin area, then remove the stitch plate

your motor is going out. time to replace or rebuild your motor. both are high skill and should be attempted by a professional. take it to your nearest bernina shop.

I have a Bernina 830 machine. When I sew the upper and lower stitch does not match Top looks normal but the bottom stitch is very loose. Please help

Sounds like you are threading the machine incorectly, try this
Rethread the machine all the way to the needle but not the needle eye.
Pull on the thread and lift and lower the presser foot at the same time.
You should have tension on the thread when the foot is down and no tension when the foot is up.
If this is so then start sewing and all should be fine.
If this is not the case then your machine needs some adjusting.
Hope this helps, if not let me know.

Bernina 830

Pop the top open. (push up on each end with thumbs). With the top off and you watch the mechanism as you move the stitch selector up and down you will notice this moves between a forked shaped part on the right side in back that is supposed to click in place back and forth. Its very common for this to be gummed
up. Oil it and keep moving it back and forth and oil it again. It will
start clicking in and you will be in business.

My machine Bernina 830 does not run.

Hi Rose Mary,

I'm assuming you are talking about the original Bernina 830 (their newest machine is also an 830!)

If you've not had your machine professionally serviced in awhile, it could be as simple as a good, thorough cleaning and adjusting. Your machine should be professionally serviced about every 1-2 years....not a bargain service that blows out the dust and puts oil on the hook, but a service that checks all the gears for wear, adjustments, hook timing, feed timing, grease for the gears (if required), removes lint build-up deep in the machine - very thorough.

There are various gears in the 830 that control these functions. It sounds as if one of the gears may be either broken or jammed. Unfortunately, unless you are trained in machine repair, this isn't something you should attempt. When gears are replaced or adjusted, generally the timing of the machine must be reset as well.

We would recommend that you take your Bernina to your nearest authorized Bernina dealer (they'll be trained on your specific machine and have easy access to any parts that may be needed).

If you do not know a dealer in your area, you can search on the Bernina website.

The original Bernina 830 was one of the greatest models Bernina has made and is well worth putting the money into keeping it running. Great machine!

Hope this helps narrow down what may be happening.

Happy stitching,
Kim & Linnette
