Error message 800706F4

By Lizzy - usenet poster

" "
When I try to sync .mp3 or .wma to my mp3 player, I get a message  saying "A
null reference pointer was passed to the stub." Anyone have any idea on how
to resolve this issue. Im using WMP 10. I had no problem with WMP 9, but now
since the upgrade this problem has risen. Any help is appreciated. Thank You.

You could also try burning all your music files to CD/DVD (i suggest you
don't use media player to do this) then erasing them from your Media player
and system (my music)  and then copying back - through explorer - the files
you copied to DVD then use the add to library tool tool.  A guess based on
the fact that if you search for audio files with the Media Player 10 tool and
it detects CD/DVD files, they will be loaded to Media player but you will not
be able to play the files again unless you have that CD/DVD inserted. If you
use explorer to copy these files from CD/DVD to say My Music and then use the
MP10 add files tool to re stack your music files you do not recieve the same
error.  I have has succes in the past using this theory with LICENSED music
which had been copied, burnt, or transfered too many times.  There is a way
around everything.  Even if you have to crash and burn a few times, its
pretty much standard procedure now.

I am using a Kingston Datatraveler to do a few transfers of music from my
computer to my brother's which has been much easier than having to go and
find the music files, especially since they're all titled track 1, track 2,
etc... and I just recently started getting this same error....

I asked lots of people about this error message but none of the replies satisfied me but I found a solution quite by accident. Load tour music into your PC in thenormal way but instead of trying to synch from Mediaplayer to your MP3 player just go to "My Music" right click on the music you wand then click "send to" and select your player. It works like a dream. Good luck.

I just did almost the same. I uninstalled WMP10, then (before rebooting)
uninstalled Windows Media Runtime. Then rebooted and installed it again. Now
it works fine, however now I know what to do in trouble:)

I know a friend of a friend who works in Microsoft and when i got the same
error message I went searching for why. It appears that this error is in fact
a deliberately built in problem. I don't know if anyone knows about
Microsofts 'Plays for Sure' system where certain brands of digital music
player are guarunteed to interact properly with Microsoft software. Well,
i've heard that certain makers of digital music player (Philips for one)
flatly refused to be so dependant on Microsoft software. And so all of those
companies that did not agree to 'Microsoft domination' (and good for them)
get errors in the new version of WMP10. I really hope this isn't the truth
but it would certainly explain why some particular brands do not work on
WMP10. Unfortunately Philips players cannot be managed through Explorer so
installing MusicMatch was the only way.

I've used both the Iomega HipZip player (CRAP!) and now a SS Rave:MP2300 Clk,
and received the same error for both devices. No help, just thought I'd share.

That seems to be the easiest answer to a lot of Windows problems...

Im:
I get the null pointer error the moment I connect my player to the USB port
with WMP10 running.  Or, if the player is already connected, the error comes
up immediately when WMP10 is started.  I don't have to even click the sync
button.

I have a large variety of MP3, some with licenses, some ripped from CD,
others from completely different sources.  I don't believe this is a license
or digital media issue.  Thanks for the suggestion, all the same.

Evil,
I suspect you are running a slightly different version of windows than I am.
This doesn't work for me.  I have XP service pack 2 installed and although I
can go through the add/remove windows component process in control panel, it
doesn't entirely remove WMP10.  I can reinstall and still have the same
error.  The windows media runtime comes out the same time I remove WMP.

Nor does the rollback option appear to work to get me back to WMP9.  If I
try the above remove process and then try to install WMP9 - the install halts
telling me it found components of a newer version already installed. I
suspect what it is seeing are the files automatically resurrected by the
windows file protection (WFP) service (if you try to delete the program files
from the WMP folder manually, the magically reappear courtesy of WFP.  They
are also still there after using the aforementioned remove process.

BTW, I didn't have this error in WMP10 prior to a crash that required an XP
reinstall.  So, short of wiping the hard disk and installing from scratch, I
think I'm screwed..... ;>)

I have been following the other thread about this problem and came to a
(albiet slightly wierd) solution, which i will also post here:

I have solved the problem, although I don't think it will help you if your
player has never worked on WMP10. I uninstalled Player 10, and then rebooted
as requested, I then went back to add remove programs and removed Windows
Media Runtime, I then downloaded WMP10 again and reinstalled it. MP3 player
works now.

Well I too am having the same stupid error, except for one difference.
I have two computers networked, a laptop and an office computer. The MP3
works fine on all of them except one.  The difference is the motherboard on
the one that is not working, it a a brand new AMX just upgraded and "BAM"
that stupid message!
I have tried all the same options listed here and as noted in other
messages, it's just as quick to drag and drop from explorer versus sync.

Sorry not too much help, just thought you might like to know your not alone.

I am using a KOSS MP3

The good news is, the null reference error message does go away, the bad, i'm
not sure how.  I plodded along with transfering wma's with explorer, then
decided to go look for another player.  Too much hassle with DRM, too much
intrusion with license mangement etc etc.  So i downloaded EVERYTHING DivX,
player, codec bundle and Dr DivX.  Did not uninstall MP10 again, persisted
with active sync USB to transfer files directly to IPAQ.  I originally used a
Crucial flash card reader for transfer, but that came up with the null error,
and never worked again really.  Switched to IPAQ - got the null error.  I now
have my card reader being recognised and synchronising media.  Only changes i
have made are the DivX downloads.  Use Spybot to regularly clean out crap and
have downloaded some River Past cam and video software.  So in there
somewhere lies the answer!

Do we really think that all the tech problems are accidents? Mmmm lets make
MP10 soooo tight that nothing with even a sniff of no license can get past
our constantly monitored PERSONAL computers, then do a deal with a record
company. Great idea.  Chuck in a couple of "Q" (SP2) files while no one's
looking and control drivers and codecs? a nano second slow down and i'm
straight into Add/Remove Programs  and 9 out of 10 times there are SP2 files
i have not requested.  I found one a couple of nights ago on a PC who's only
reference was pointed to a "KB" SP1 file.  Funnilly enough that file spoke
about encoding and decoding....... finally found the target and it was a
hidden running SP2 program...mmmmmmmmmm.

But to the rescue comes divX, River Past and others who have noticed the
extent of dissatisfaction with MP10 and are providing quality sofware free of
charge and are taking up the slack.  Maybe MS a little afraid of loosing
media player altogether and have sent a little hotfix to make it all
better??????????? Question everything!  Good luck.

PS Lainer: Gates might not write the software - anymore - but he can fly
into space - how hard can a media player be -  he know's exactly what he's
doing.  "Knowledge is Power" Gates - 1998.  Providing software that messes
with your other exspensive equipment, music collection and that can only
partially be uninstalled is completely unacceptable. Gates has a monopoly and
should use it wisely.  Unfortunately Linux will not save the world.

Chris,
Relax, I'm well aware that Bill Gates hasn't written software since DOS.
Sheesh.  I know this is peer support, my OEM copy of Windows doesn't entitle
me to support from Microsoft without paying.  So, I hope for some help here.

As far as 6 error reports out of X millon users?  Still not acceptable.
I've been working in the IT industry for more than 30 years, before even
Billy got religion.  Microsoft should, like any other development house
strive for six sigma quality.

Wrong, WMP10 is throwing the error and the device is working properly.  It's
a WMP error code.

No, I won't be switching to Linux anytime soon either - dispite problems
with Windows.  If you know what you're talking about you know it's not that
easy - is it?

Let me know when you have concrete information about how to fix this
problem.  In the mean time, I'll have to use MusicMatch.

Hello,
Sorry, no answers, just another poor soul with the same stupid null
reference error and no MS help at all.  My situation is a little different so
I thought I would share in the hopes it might spark a thought.

I have a Sandisk 512MB player.  Had WMP10 already installed, player worked
with it fine.  Had an XP crash that required running XP setup to get PC
functional again.  Now everything works as it did except sync in WMP10 - you
guessed it - 800706F4.

I deleted and reinstalled WMP10 twice, second time even tried to physically
delete the program folder - got most of it but amazingly most of the core
player files come back from the dead automatically (must be an XP thing).
Still no luck.

I know the player works fine because I can access it through Windows
Explorer (just as mjustagirl215 spoke about) and I installed MusicMatch -
works fine.

So........... Mr. Gates where are u?  Do I hear Linux calling my name?  ;>)

I'm guess you asked for help from them?  This is peer support, help from WMP
users.  It's not a replacement for PSS.  Considering the amount the error
has been reported (What 6 out of how many million WMP users?) it's not a big
shock you don't see a solution.

That error doesn't come from WMP, it's going from something WMP is trying to
use.

Why do people think Bill Gates writes the software?  Do you know how little
he really has to do with most of the products released by Microsoft?

Do you?  If your not happy with Windows don't use it!  Why would you?
Download Fedora Core 3 and install it.  There is a 0.5% chance you will
however.  Anyone who thinks treating to switch is a good scare tactic will
just end up right back using Windows and likely never touch *nix at all.

If you have been working in IT that long you should know that reproduction
of an issue is key to a solution.  This can't happen without users getting
the error taking a step up.

Nope.  WMP can and will only shoot out prefixed with "C00D...".  "800"...
errors will never and can never come from WMP directly.  Can't happen.
Impossible for WMP itself to shoot out any error starting with "800".  Any
error starting with "800" is coming from something WMP is trying to use (Not
WMP itself).

Not true.  Pick up a copy of Fedora Core 3 free from Red Hat.  If you can
use Windows, you can use Linux.  For those looking for it to be hard, it can
be.  The interface that you will see is little away from Windows.

Until I can get a repro that will not happen.  Until Microsoft can get
someone with a repro you will never know what is giving you that error. :\

Am I correct in seeing that no one has come up with a solution for 2 months?
What's up Bill?  I too have now encountered one of MP10's many glitches -
should still be beta in my opinion. I am using a 512 flash memory card and
reader and HP IPAQ 5550 Media Player 9 version - don't get much closer to
home.  I've used my devices unremarkably for months - but now have enountered
the same error - in my humble opinion it may be a problem with the players
device manager and or codecs. Firstly it recognized my card reader as F:
instead of G: but managed to tell me how many MB the device contained?????
windows in general understood the device. A clash or overload of codecs
perhaps. I certainly do have a spectacular collection - some showing in sys32
with a winking smillee??? I'm going to reinstall for the 4th time and send
codecs to dvd.  Hello MS $$$$$ worth of equiptment and music - someone in the
know give us a tech response - imjustagirl215, and blonde - becoming very
busy training as a tech as a second career!!!!!

Hey Matt. You know what, I didnt get an answer yet on how to fix it. I got
fed up with it, and as much as I like WMP 10, it just wouldnt work for my mp3
player.  So I uninstalled 10 and reinstalled 9.  The mp3 player doesnt have a
problem with 9. That seems to be the only solution as of right now, and im
not buying a new mp3 player. Thank care man. hope it works out for you.
