Question about Sony KDL-46NX810 46 in. 3D LCD TV

Sony Bravia KDL-46NX810 shuts off with 3D input only

My Sony Bravia KDL-46NX810 shuts down with a 3D input signal only. With a regular 2D input signal it works fine. After it shuts down, the Stand By LED blinks 6 times. About 3-5 seconds before shutting down by itself the screen dims a bit and I noticed the screen blinking a bit in the upper right corner. I checked the Diagnostics Screen (Display,5,VOL -, Power), and it shows a Backlite error. I visually inspected the Backlight Inverter board and everything looks normal. However I cleaned it a bit, removed dust, etc and connected everything back without the back cover of the TV and turned on my 3D BlueRay player. When the first 3D image appeared I noticed a noise coming out from the power supply board (I guess). It is a rattling noise, and I believe it comes from one of the transformers. So I am thinking the problem is not necessarily the backlight inverter board, but it might be related to the power supply. Any hints? what component (s) might be faulty in the power supply? Or is the backlight inverter draining too much current form the power supply?

I made some other tests with my set and the same problem happened when I activated the 3D Simulation feature

I called Sony Customer Service and after an hour conducting the same tests I had conducted myself they told me my TV had to be serviced.

Well written question but I would first call Sony Customer service to see if known issue or if the data base shows any reports or recalls for this issue.......

Hi Gerard,
3 flashes of the led light on most KDL series is a power supply malfunction. To confirm the error code, lets access the self diagnostic screen by following the steps below.

Unplug the unit from the outlet for 30 minutes and then plug it back in and check if the symptoms remain the same. Wait until the led light stops from flashing and then press in rapid sequence the "Display", "Channel 5", "Volume (-)", "Power" button key on the remote control. Self diagnostic screen will be display. Let me know the result.

How to improve picture quality sharpness?

PICTURE QUALITY IS USUALLY A FUNTION OF IT'S SOURCE. GARBAGE IN GARBAGE OUT.
IF YOU HAVE COMCAST OR SATELLITE AND IT IS NOT HD, YOU NEED TO HAVE AN HD SIGNAL FOR THE BEST PICTURE. THE BEST INPUT IS THRU THE HDMI INPUT. IF YOUR UNIT HAS A GOOD PICTURE WITH YOUR DVD UNIT, THEN THE HAVE A SIGNAL SOURCE ISSUE.
