SOURCE: HDD is cactus, what are replacement alternatives for the OEM?

You can use any 2.5 inch ATA/IDE drive as a replacement. Notebook hdd's are a smaller size than regular desktop hdd's. You can find a good idea online at stores like tigerdirect.com or newegg.com. Hope this helps & please rate this answer fixya. Thanks.

Well the old Dell takes ATA connections. Newer laptops are SATA. Which did you buy?
A new disk drive needs to be partitioned and the operating system needs loaded. Did you do that?
Did you back up all your data to an external device so you can load it on the new disk?

Does a 80 gb hdd require a bios update for this computer

Hi:
Your computer will support an 80 gb hard drive. It will recognize up to 137 gb, and you could actually install a 160, with the included set up software that shipped with the new hard drive.

To resolve a HDD password on a Dell Portable, you have 2 options.

Call Dell (1-800-624-9896 USA) Confirm you are an authorized user of the system, and they will assist in generating a master password.

or

Replace the hard drive.

Call Dell if under warranty. Start shopping for a replacement hdd if outside of warranty. You'll need
your OS disks that came with computer (hopefully). If you don't have OS/recovery disks, you can get
them from Dell or even using somebody elses (match version with sticker on your laptop).

Check the hdd connection underneath laptop - make sure cable is not loose, etc.

Probably safe to say your data is gone unless you're willing to spend $$.

The video card is NOT upgradeable.

the system should support a 120 GB HDD

NOTE: This system is old enough to be considered operationally obsolete and not a good candidate for an upgrade. Especially with new portables starting at $499
