Looking for a manual for a American Standard hydronic gas heating system

Want a owners manual for our American Standard hydronic gas heating furnace. The house was built in 1968 and the furnace is the original furnace. The previous owners left us no manuals. Thanks, Vickie

SOURCE: how to light a American Standard furnace

If it is an old furnace with a manual pilot light there are pilot lighting instructions usually on a door or panel. If it is 15 years old or newer it probably has either a spark ignition or a hot surface ignitor. These can't be lit manually. If they fail they usually require parts to be repaired.

I have a American Standard furnace Freedom 80 Mod# AUD080C936H3 and am looking for a manal or can you tell me how the exauhst is done. Can I use PVC

Hello, The only time pvc is allowed is if the Furnace is 90% or greater in effiecency, the combustion gases are cooler due to the fact that two heat exvhangers are used. One pipe will be you air intake and the other the exhaust and they can be routed through the roof or sidewall. If the Furnace is 80% then you must use double wall vent pipe and have it connected to either a liner in a chimney or routed through a roof but pvc can not be used.

what you have is called a hydronic heating system.
this heating system is completely isolated from your water heater I believe this as most hydronic systems I have installed circulate water through the furnace to heat the house. If this is true you need only to connect your old water heater cold water supply side to the tankless and, old hot water side to the house system: the showers/tubs/sinks etc. in your home.
my appologies if I have missunderstood your inquiry.

IS A HYDRONIC ELECTRIC BASEBOARD MORE EFFICENT THEN THE STANDARD ELECTRIC BASEBOARD HEATER

I have some confusion about what you are asking......

There is no such thing as "Hydronic Electric Baseboards"......

I am assuming you are referring to the oil filled baseboard heaters. If so....

The same amount of btu's required to heat a space remain the same whether the elements heat a liquid to warm the air or whether they heat the air directly, the same amount of wattage will be consumed. So, their is no more or less efficiency between the two.

If you are referring to "Hydronic Baseboard Heaters" (these baseboards are fed from a boiler with a pump) Then....I will assume that it is a gas boiler. In which case, the gas boiler would be more cost efficient to operate. If it is an electric the same rule applies as above......the cost is the same.

American Standard Gas furnace acting weird

I am concerned of the readings you have given. 120 volts to ground, but 168 volts to neutral? And having 10 amps of current at the "ventor", but only 1 amp for the whole furnace worries me, because power for the "ventor" comes through the furnace.

You should not have 168 volts to anything! Unless somehow 240 volts is feeding the system, and there is a medium resistance short somewhere.

The controller boards are sensitive to AC polarity (if you will). Neutral should be tied to neutral on the board. You can check that by testing for voltage between the neutral terminal and chassis ground (assuming the chassis is properly grounded.). The hot leg of incoming power, which should be 120 volts, should be connected to the terminal that says 120 VAC.

If your getting 168 volts AC somehow, then something is wrong, and you need to disconnect power from this unit until you find the cause.

As a heat-A/C tech, you should know the sequence of operation for all furnaces is pretty much the same. The boards, while manufactured by different manufacturers, all operate pretty much the same way.

Let me know your findings in reply and I will attempt to help you more.

Changing Thermostats

This is one where you will need a good control man or woman. The American Standard ASYST system is not intended for the homeowner to change out. It has a room sensor wire that others do not account for.
