I was sewing with my two year old Artista 630 when the screen went gray and it just stopped. There had been no accident, e.g., I didn't break a needle or anything like that. It just stopped.
Since then, the machine will turn on and stay on briefly. But whether it's just sitting there or I'm actually sewing, after a few minutes the screen turns gray and it "goes to sleep." There is no error message or warning. The machine's light remains on, so I don't think the problem has to do with the power source.
Do you have any thoughts as to where I can start troubleshooting before I take it in for repair?
Unfortunately this is often a symptom of a fault on the main processor/control board and can be expensive to fix. If your machine is still under warranty, get it looked-at by a qualified Bernina service agent quickly - dont wait for it to fail completely. The other thing you can do is get the firmware updated - this can be done whilst the machine is still working and the update will ensure that there is no corrupted data whether-or-not the version number is the same as present. Unfortunately it is not possible to re-load the firmware if a corruption occurs that stops the machine getting past the blue 'Bernina' introduction screen and this can be expensive to repair.
There is also a known fault that occurs occasionally as a result of a problem with the power supply module ('L'-print). The secondary +5v supply sometimes drops to +3.5v or fails completely - this is evidenced by the sewing light and display backlight coming on OK and the machine tries to boot-up, but fails, or intermittently re-boots itself during use. Unfortunately the LED indicators behind the front panel door continue to show the correct status under these conditions, so the problem can be difficult to diagnose without checking all the supply lines with a voltmeter. For the non-technical, any fault like this should be a 'return to Bernina service agent' problem.
My machine just did the same thing to me tonight, much to my utter dismay. It was sewing and suddenly switched completely off. I turned it back on and kept sewing. After 3 times of it switching off and my turning it back on, it won't come on at all. I don't have a clue as to why I kept sewing. Can you define 'expensive to repair?' I'd like a rough ballpark--$1000-$1500? Thanks for your time.

My troubleshooting would involve taking it in to a Bernina certified technician as it would involve pulling off the covers of your machine for a look. Often this can be the cause of overheating due to high levels of lint build up from people using compressed air to blow out their machine (compressed air is notorius for blowing lint into other areas of the machine) I have also seen the odd plug end swell because customers use harsh cleaning products and it will then not seat properly.
