Question about Sewing Machines

Open Question

I have a Kenmore Sewing Machine (model 158.17741) that has pattern cams. The problem is that I can not remove the metal cam.

I would like to use some of the 30+ (plastic) pattern cams but can't because I can't remove the metal cam. I have the original instructions/owners manual but it does not provide information on performing this task. Please help. Thanks.

SOURCE: kenmore sewing machine model 385 16764

There's a website called managemyhome.com which is sponsored by Sears. It's free to join. Go to the Home Manager column and choose Owner's Manuals from the drop down menu.

You can type in the brand name (Kenmore) and model number of your machine. Not all of them are in there but, I did find the one for the 1950280 question. It's a pdf file.

For the 38516764 question, please double check your model number. I received either no response or a Kenmore Elite dishwasher manual in response to my query.

Those books are long since out of print. Try contacting sewing machine stores who stock old instruction books. Many shops do this. Or try eBay.

I have a sears kenmore sewing machine model 148-13100 where is oil needed?

If it is an older mechanical machine, 1-2 drops oil (ONLY fresh, good quality sewing machine oil) applied every place where metal rubs against metal. AVOID belts, plastic gears, CAMS. Slowly hand-rotate or wiggle the handwheel, watch where metal parts move against each other and apply a couple drops. Be sure to get the top mechanism, the side mechanism where the needlebar is located, and under the sewing surface, ie the feed dogs area. Also, move levers and dials and apply a couple drops where metal rubs metal.

Can't get seam former out

To remove the seam former (stitch pattern cam).

- Move your stitch selection dial so the white dot on the dial lines up with the red dot on the body of the machine. Then you pull the cam out.

It can be difficult to remove if the cam has been sitting in the machne for a long time.

My sears sewing machine cams wont work it just sews a straight stitch or zig zag. I wonder if there is suppose to be a spring to hold it closer so that it follows the pattern on the cam.

Yes there are springs and many other parts that need to make the stitch patterns. I suggest you take it to a qualified sewing machine repair shop. Often the pattern selector can be cracked, a linkage can be stuck or a dozen other problems will cause this.

Bernina 707 Cam removal

take off the black metal bit that is above the pattern cam (4 screws). beneath you see 2 small screws, inside the metal frame, on each side of pattern cam. Take them out. Spin the pattern cam until you see one screw in the cam itself. Take that out too. Now you can push the splint out which holds the cam.
