Question about Computers & Internet
It's six days since the sound, in less than a minute, gradually faded away and disappeared from the machine. (OS: XP Professional SP 2, Browser IE 8, Media player VLC 2.0.0.)
First, I'd check to see if the headphone jack still worked. If not, then the sound chip on the motherboard is probably shot. Next, I'd get a 'live' linux cd, like ubuntu (http://www.ubunto.com). This will run the linux os right from the cd without installing anything. If you still don't get any sound, it's almost certainly a hardware issue. Replacing chips on a multi layer circuit board is no easy matter. Your best bet if the sound hardware is dead is to get a USB sound card.
