Question about Shure SM57-LC Professional Microphone

1 Answer

Trouble with three SM57 having low volume unless directly on sound source

Testing mic near pillow muted (on the bottom) floor tom (mik'd on top), picks up very little sound unless near directly on the tom head. When close to tom head it peaks and clicks due to the sound pressure OR volume. This happens with 3 of them. Tested a good cable. All tested individually, all tested through a Presonus StudioLive. Solution???

It is unlikely there is anything wrong wit the mics. The SM57 is very simple. Literally just a magnet and coil of wire. The problem that you describe is likely caused by your mixer, the presonus, etc.

SOURCE: shure sm58 just started outputting very low volume

Check your wire connections inside the mic where the xlr cable connects to the mic. Hopefully your mic has never been dropped as this will damage it. The sm58 is pretty much indestructible, so check your cabling that you use, try a different channel.

Buttkicker Gamer 2 Amplifier won't turn on, light stays orange when it should be green. used to be a struggle sometimes to get it to turn green by using the remote, now it just stays orange all the...

Your Gamer 2 Amp turns on whenever an audio signal is present on the input. The amp can have trouble tuning on if the output of the source (computer sound card, etc.) has been turned down. This can happen easily if you use amplified speakers - if you turn the sound card's volume control down - and then increase the volume at the amplified speaker - the resulting sound is the same; even though the signal has been lowered. The problem is that the output from the sound card isn't sufficient to turn on the Gamer 2 Amp.

Try turning down the external speaker volume, then bump up the sound card volume. You'll probably need to adjust the other inputs individually (Wave, Mic, CD, etc) so that none is too loud or soft. Once the input values have been set, gradually increase the output of the sound card in the control panel application etc. while decreasing the volume on the amplified speaker to maintain a comfortable level. Eventually, you'll find the correct volume level on the sound card output that will wake up the Gamer 2 Amp.

If you're still having trouble, review the manual, here. I hope this helps & good luck!

Low volume from Fishman Loudbox Mini mic input, using brand new XLR cable and dynamic mic. Mic works just fine on instrument input using a Hi-Z cable so problem is not mik

I have seen defective XLR cables so check it with an ohmmeter. It is possible the mic input preamp has been damaged. If that is the case, the unit will have to be repaired.

I installed my interface, but my recording software still isn't picking up sound from my mic

You may need to enable the microphone in control panel - see below

You will also need to check the correct sound source is selected in your recording program.

Using a microphone with computer

To use any microphone with your computer you will need to enable it in control panel. The following instructions are for Windows XP but are broadly similar for Vista and Win7

Click START, CONTROL PANEL, SOUNDS & AUDIO DEVICES

Click VOICE

In Sounds & Audio Devices Properties window locate SOUND PLAYBACK box. Click the VOLUME button. Make sure that there is not a check-mark in the MUTE box against microphone in the list of devices and that the volume slider is at the top of the scale.

Make sure the MUTE ALL box isn't checked before closing the window.

Now click the VOLUME button in the SOUND RECORDING BOX. Here SELECT microphone as an input source for recording (as opposed to un-checking mute in the playback controls).

NOTE if your microphone is not listed in the 2 sets of volume controls click OPTIONS, PROPERTIES on the tool-bar and place a check against microphone in the list entitled 'show the following volume controls' and then click OK. Same applies for Internal mic.

That should be it.

To adjust audio volume generally.

Under VOLUME tab adjust Device Volume as necessary. Also (under Loudpeaker Settings) click Speaker Volume and adjust slider to suit.

You might put a check mark in the box to show the volume control on the Task Bar so you can go straight to it to make adjustments in the future.

ATR3350 Microphone: Battery in. Plugged into laptop. Recorded video. ATR3350 Mic is ignored. Audio is still recorded from my Logitech Webcam software. How does this thing work?

You need to tell your computer which microphone / sound source to use.
In he absence of other instructions it is defaulting to the built in microphone.
Normally your sound-card software should detect a new device plugged in and ask you to confirm it. However if it is not doing so you may need to change the audio settings.
How to correct this will vary slightly depending on which operating system you are using.

If your webcam/ microphone is built in to the laptop there should also be a volume control called 'Internal MIC' - disable it by placing a check-mark in the mute box.

That should be it but it is possible you may also need to turn off the microphone in the software for your web-cam.

I get a quiet signal when using the mic.

Hi,

You should use the mic input of your computer.
If it's not there, use a microphone pre-amplifier.

Either the volume is low or muted. You need to scroll through the menu and check sounds. There may well be a speaker with a red cross through it in your menu which will indicate it is muted. The volume control is pound by tapping in the corner of the screen-I think its bottom right. When you switch on you tomtom it may well say the version number. Does it speak for general directions? If it does and the above does not solve anything then look for the setting which lets you choose "audible alerts" or just alerts as you should have an option of getting the spoken warning which you want.

No sound in my headset during pc to pc call

You might have to enable your mic in Windows. To do this, look for the speaker icon on the bottom right corner on the taskbar, right near the clock. Double click it and then click on OPTONS then PROPERTIES. Click on RECORDING. Make sure you have a check mark next to MICROPHONE. Click OK. On the next page will be your volume levels. Make sure the MIC level is not muted or that it isn't to low. Hope this helps. . .
