Question about Canon PowerShot A75 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Lens inoperative? When camera is turned on, there is no image on the screen, just flashing horizontal lines. It will take a picture and the flash goes off, but the result is a picture of the flashing horizontal lines. Any fix for this? Is the camera repairable? Would we send it back to Canon for repair? What would be the approximate cost? Thank you.

Cost of repair is free with free shipping too! This definitely sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon will fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Why is line flashing on monitor?

If the pictures have lines or marks in them when loaded up on a computer screen then it's a fault with the image sensor inside the camera, if they do not then it's a fault with the lcd screen on the camera, either way it's not an easy fix and will probably cost more than a new camera

Horizontal Lines throughout the images

What Canon technician told you that your camera did not have a CCD? You sure that he was from Canon? And also the cost of repair would likely be more than the latest A480. Also note that you can get an A470 for around $70 these days. But no this is likely not CCD failure and is more likely a stuck shutter.

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see the following for further info and a simple fix that may help:

http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2009/05/simple-fix-for-stuck-shutter.html

Note that the article says to set your camera to 15 second exposure. This is not possible with the A430. Instead set it to manual mode, turn the flash off, and go into a darkened room. Take your picture there. Open the door while the red and yellow lights are flashing. Now the possibility for success with this method is not that great so don't get your hopes up. But it's worth a try before shopping around for a new camera.

This sure looks like a CCD image sensor failure. If so, you can't fix this yourself. If the camera is less than a year old, Canon will fix this for you under warranty. Call 1-800-OK-CANON.

Uneven flash

Look carefully at your images taken with flash... on the horizontal image is the lower part of the image slighty darker and have a rounded fall off at the edges? Is the vertical image dark side a straight hard line or is there a rounding to the top and bottom?

What we are looking at is if you have a very wide angle lens with the lens shade attached to the lens, then the built-in flash catches part of the lens shade and make a shadow on your subject... take the lens shade off and try the same shot and see if that makes a difference...

Have a great day...

It is certainly the CCD failing. Now you have had it over a year so warranty is out. But there have been instances of certain CCD's being subject to a recall- and the camera being replaced. Give Canon a support a go - you may get lucky.
