Serial number

With newer Canons you have to run a software program to "initialize" the board when you replace it. The board comes blank, and you have to add the program and settings to run the camera. The software also allows you to replace the serial numbers, do exposure and auto focus adjustments etc. Canon does not sell this proprietary software. You would have to send the camera to Canon and they would charge you the set repair price. Wish I had better news. But try adding the latest firmware. I am not sure if the 40D is the cutoff for this or it started with the 50D. You have to do this with all current Canon models.

I'm looking for new drivers

Hello. Click HERE to view and download the drivers you need for your Canon EOS 40D.

Select your OS (Operating System - Windows XP, Vista, 7, etc.) and choose a category (Software, Firmware, etc). Download and save the driver to your computer. Run and install it properly!

Lost functions of camera

Setup Screen 3 has an option for "Clear all camera settings" which will reload the defaults. If that's not what you need, you could try re-installing the firmware, but if the firmware is corrupt, you likely can't launch it. If your camera is just locked up, try removing the battery and reinserting. If that doesn't do it, Canon's Tech support can be suprisingly helpful: 1-800-OK-CANON, or you can download the manual from www.usa.canon.com - here's a shortcut to the 40D download page from the above site: http://bit.ly/ch8RSK (The actual Camera Instruction Manual is the last item under "Guides and Manuals"). If I'm misunderstanding the problem, feel free to respond.

When I put the canon ex40 II in autozoom, it does not show focal length or distance on canon 40D, what am i missing? canon 40D has the latest 1.1.1 firmware

The lens you are using might not support the autozoom. Some Sigma, Tamron and other 3th party lenses are known for these problems. Best solution is to buy genuine Canon lenses, the best partners for your Canon body. (No I'm not related to Canon, I've just seen a lot of these problems with other lenses)

Auto focus not working

The lens AF mode is not working. What lens is it you are using?

It is not a camera issue but a lens issue. Try a different lens to be certain.

Eos 40d error 99

Error 99 can mean many things. Have you installed the latest firmware for the camera (version 1.1.1)? If you don't have, download it here (for equipment purchased in USA or Puerto Rico):

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eos40d/eos40d-firmware-e.html

If you have the latest firmware, try this:

  1. Switch off the camera and remove the CF card and battery
  2. Keep the camera idle for 30 min
  3. Clean all the contacts of the camera (battery contacts, lens contacts etc) with an eraser. Do this keeping the camera facing down so that no debris fall into the camera.
  4. Attach the lens and insert the battery.
  5. Switch on the camera
  6. Insert the CF card
  7. If the error persists, format the card again
  8. If this does not work, try using another CF card.

I think this might be a firmware issue.www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=17779#DownloadDetailAct
Here is a link to Canon's website for your 40D there you will find the latest firmware version for your camera. Version 2.0.0 which includes 1.0.8 . In 1.0.8 item #3 in the list of changes it states repairs a phenomenon where reviewed images appear unnatural.
