Heating water can peculate chemicals out of water, such as metals and organics.
Especially above 138 degrees.
Have well water tested.
Turn down thermostat temperature.
Or reasonably harmless well-water bacteria can react with anode rod, or other reaction in softener, to produce colored water, and smells.
Different water can produce different sludges, brown, red, gray, black, yellow.
The sludge can also combine with deteriorating pipe flakes to clog water flow.
Sludge can accumulate over years in low spots in pipes, or at elbows and constrictions.
Have plumber flush pipes.
Or run new pipes.
Also delime tankless yearly, and flush with white vinegar as shown in product manual, and treat bacteria with H2O2 hydrogen peroxide.

SOURCE: PowerStar AE125 seems to have failed

the circuit board is gone bad, try this, with power off reset the overload on the heater.Turn power back on and turn on water to the unit. with no taps open hold the pipe near the left element for a few minutes. it will most likely getting verry hot and trip the overload.(this is done with no water running and power on to the unit).you may even hear the water in the left elemnet start to boil or sizle. the reason for this is the triacs on the cir board are bad.I have troubleshoot this troblem many times. the design is bad and their in now a new unit (redesign) out . bosch knows their junk and wont cover them beyond 1 yr. one way around it is call tech at bosch and tell them its leaking. the u will get one of the new designs. Also applies to the AE125, Rp27pt

Powerstar ae125 runs hot then cold in shower

Increase your flow, sounds like you are right at your activation rate.
1 way is to turn down the temp on the machine, so you dont have to mix in so much cold at your shower. Check to see if your mixing valve is bad, or your showerhead has restriction/scale built up in it.The other way is to turn on your lavatory fixture full hot before showering(which will keep hot water flowing through the machine as you adjust your temp to be comfortable.

Question posted under Bosch tankless.
Question says 'tank'
Brand, model, and type heater unknown.
Elements mean electric.
'Thermal cutout pops when taking shower produces cold water' indicates tankless, since tank-type would maintain some hot water.
No error code might indicate tank-type.
Add a comment with type, brand and model number of heater for possible assistance.

Electric bill doubled last month, and we've had the Powerstar AE125 tankless electric for over a year. There are no leaky faucets.

There are a lot of other things that eat electricity. Like space heater and using ovens for heat. Heat pump.Central heat fan running all the time. House lights left on. Outside flood lights. Clothes washer using HOT water. Look around real good. It all adds up. Also the power co. may be charging more for "fuel" costs surcharges. Here in GA I'm paying a bit more now to pay for a nuclear power plant.

Ok, sounds like a flow sensor issue, is your house water pressure steady or does it fluctuate? The sensors on these seem to be a common issue and this model has many issues with heating. take care

Hot water tank does not work when shower is on, it does however work when the faucet in bathroom is on. It quit working in the shower about a month ago.

  1. COLD MIX, HEATER DEACTIVATES
If inlet water temperature is over 70°F due to geographic location, water maybe very hot out of the tap. This requires a lot of cold water to be added with it in order to attain a useable hot water temperature. The addition of too much cold water will overpower hot water demand from the tankless water heater. This slows the flow within the tankless water heater, decreasing it below activation point, which shuts off the heater. The end result is nothing but cold water coming out of the outlet. See: TWH E2-04 Overcoming fluctuating temperatures [PDF].
  2. FLUCTUATING WATER PRESSURE
If the water pressure in the home is erratic and the water flow is not consistent while a tap is opened, then the temperature of hot water will fluctuate. The minimum water pressure for the home should be 30psi or greater. For people on well systems the minimum pressure range is 30-50psi. The use of a pressure reducing/regulating valve is an effective way to maintain constant water pressure to the water heater. Watts brand 25AUB- ¾" or N35B-¾" pressure reducing/regulating valves or equivalent is suggested.
  3. CHANGING FLOW RATE
Major changes in flow rate can adversely affect the output water temperature of the heater. Increases from one major fixture running to multiple fixtures running at one time can cause the temperature to fluctuate. Stay within the heater's specifications. See: TWH E2-03 Outlet temperature vs. flow rate [PDF].
From the Bosch website.

Good Luck,
Gary

Easiboost power shower - problem

it comes on when the pressure changes so when you open another faucet it changes the pressure and makes it come on,, check your pressure regulator valve on the main line comming into the house it has a screw in the center, if you have a pressue gage put it on either the water heater drain or out side hose bib , check the pressure when turning water on and off if it changes more then 5 lbs you need to change your prv valve. pressure regulator valve,

You have a blown element. If you purchased the heater, call Bosch for technical assistance, and the unit should be under warranty. The grey matter your getting is the magnesium that the elements have in them.
