Swapping the hard drive from the Dell into the Gateway will not work because the Dell hard drive has been installed with Dell specific drivers and configurations.
When you install the Dell hard drive into the Gateway you need to wipe the hard drive and install a fresh copy Windows XP onto this hard drive and the Gateway device drivers etc.

Assuming the HD's are both of the same type (IDEor SATA) you can certainly switch the HD's. The problem is that it sounds like you expect it to boot the Windows XP that is on the new HD. This just MIGHT happen but in most cases it won't Even if it does the config will not be proper and your resulting system will be unstable, ready to crash at any time. The new HD will have to be formatted and fresh XP will have to be reinstalled on it for you to have a reliable system running. The mobo and the HD work in tandem to keep a healthy system going. Also you need a minimum of 256 mb of RAM for XP to work properly, much more if you want to really do stuff on your machine. XP will install with a mere 128 of ram but the resulting speed is no match for all the other stuff you encounter on the web etc etc. 256 is a bare minimum..................

If that machine has Internet access, try using Windows Update. You could also try Dell's site.

Installing secondary hard drive in a gateway 5310s

in most new cases there are extra slots for extra hard drives, but as long as the ide or sata is hooked up it should work, and you can buy hardware and rig up something ,ive tested many hard drives without hooking up hardware,
the components on the hard drive should not touch other metal

Is your motherboard support that kind of processor?

Do you run it with the previous installation with the old processor, which is in the harddrive? Its best for clear installed so that all settings are configured to your new setup. Your new setup remembers the old processor.

Sometimes setting the bios to default and reconfiguring it once again solve the problems.

Bad dell hard drive

Hi there,
as long as you have the windows COA code on the back of the computer (certificate of Authenticity) you can just find a good copy of XP Pro, and install it on your machine. When done, you can run the resorce CD and install the drivers.

If you do not have the Operating System disk, you have to find another disk, or contact Dell to get a new one sent to you.

The key is that you have the code on the back of the computer (or top, or side, or wherever.)

Good luck!

Maxtor IDE Hard Drive

You hard drive has drivers and was set to a different computer, thus enviroment. To make that hard drive work on your new computer - the Operating System will have to have a repair done to it - if you do a repair - you will not lose any docs or email, but, you will have to re-install programs to see the re-done Operating System, then you will have to load all the drivers that operate your new dell computer - if the new dell was not designed for XP and only vista - it will never read that Hard Drive till you install Vista on it.
