Question about Computers & Internet
Well, there can be two main reasons for it:
1) Either the brightness of your screen is lessened to a greater extent. If that is the case than you can increase the brightness by pressing FN (Function) key and a key from F1 to F12 based on your laptop setting to increase the brightness. Generally it is F7 to decrease the Brightness & F8 to increase the brightness.
2) If your brightness is alright then there is a problem with your LCD Panel. Take it to nearest Compaq Authorized Vendor for a check up. There may be a lose connection or a fault with your LCD Panel.

Your back light or the back light power board is the problem. The way you checked with the flash light is exactly how to find out if it is a back light issue. The ghost desktop is the indication as the image is there but just not illuminated. The back light is like the bulb on a film projector. If it goes out the images are still there you just can't see them.
This is covered by warranty if you have any. So if you think you do you should contact the store you bought it from or contact Sony. If you think you have extended warranty that is usually through the purchase store. If you don't have warranty you have to be a bit more careful. The repair cost will be about $100-$150 with most of that being labour as well as any shipping on top of it. So you want to make sure it isn't excessive. On some low end laptops the repair is as much as a new one. Your other alternative is a bit of DIY.
I don't know where you are located so no idea if any of the places that supply parts are close to you etc. If you do a search for "Sony laptop VGN-NR160e backlight" or "laptop repair parts" you will find literally hundreds of sources. This is a job you can do yourself. This link shows you how how to do it on your model. http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_8.htm That will give an idea of what you would have to do. This next link is a place that sells the bulb as well as the inverter board. I'd replace both while you have it apart. The bulb is $10 and the board is $19. If you have the tools which is basically a small Phillips screw driver and something to use as a case splitter like a credit card and a drop of glue to put the little rubber screw covers back in place. This next link is for the inverter board and just click along the left side to get to the back light bulb (or search by model).
Those are your options for a bad back light. If you are considering doing it yourself there are videos and other pages you can look at. Instead of junking it or using a external monitor all the time the parts are cheap enough to make it worthwhile looking at doing it yourself.
