Question about Dacor DMT2420SS Microwave Oven

1 Answer

M/w only working when slight pressure applied to door button

This morning, our Dacor m/w oven stopped working - panel was still on and counting down seconds as normal, but no m/w sound or platform turning. After tinkering with it, I realized that the m/w sound and platform returned to normal when I apply a slight amount of pressure to the dooor opening button (not enough to open the door). Seems like there is a contact behind that button that is a bit off.

How can I fix this myself? I removed the door button, cleaned and inspect it but I cannot seem to see anything I can do barring taking the whole thing apart. Any help is much appreciated
Thanks
---Greg

Thanks so much for the helpful answer. I will try to open the microwave tomorrow to see if any screws are loose around the mounts or switch. How would I know if that's indeed the switch that needs to be replaced?

Also, as further development, as of tonight the trick of applying some pressure to the door button does not work anymore - the oven does not cook now and just counts down the seconds as if nothing was wrong. Does it change your opinion on the problem?

    Thanks again

    ---Greg

That would be a defective secondary interlock (lower door switch) or its mount.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

We have the service manual for this model and have uploaded it to our site here to help you.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

The switch may click and still be bad. You would really need to do a continuity check to see if it's making contact. If the mount is solid and is aligned, then it's probably the switch.

Since pushing the door used to work but does not, it may be that the looseness or misalignment has increased, or the switch has gotten worse.

The best best is to unplug it, take the cover off, then observe how the door latch heads go into the chassis and if they snap the switches down all the way.

The Dacor DMT2420S microwave has power. Instrument dial is lite and the timer works. I can program the keypad however the turntable will not turn and the microwave will not work. The timer will count down...

There's no reset button, and if the fuse were blown, the oven would be totally dead.

Your problem is almost certainly a failed secondary interlock (bottom door switch) or its mount.

You can see our help file on door switches here and the service manual here.

Door won't open

What usually breaks is the door open lever, but it may also be that the rear side of the door open button has worn down too far to work.

On a counter top model, the outer cover will need to be removed to diagnose and repair this. On an over-the-range model, only the control panel needs to be
removed.

If yours is a DMT2420 or other counter top model that is built into a cubbly hole and surrounded by a metal grille (built-in kit), the kit will have to be removed, then the oven will slide out of the opening.

Once it's out, you can remove the outer cover and you'll be able to see how the door open button would press against the door open lever, which would then lift up against the door latch heads (hook-like projections on the door) and the door should open.

The model tag will either be on the back or around the door frame or control panel frame, or maybe inside the cooking cavity.

We have several Dacor microwave service manuals at our site:
It's a pain, but for Dacor the parts list are separate:
Once you have the part number of the part you need, you can order by part number here.

(This site does not list Dacor by model number, only by part number)

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.

One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or handle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's a door switch mount or door alignment issue.

Dacor dcm24s.light, fan, and control panel work but turntable and heat do not

Most likely the bottom door switch. Dacor units are built by Sharp and that switch is a very common problem. You'd either need to check the switch with an ohm meter or remove the cover of the switch to see if it's burned inside.

Dacor DMD2420S

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

This can be caused by slamming the door or by habitually opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.
