SOURCE: Yr 2000 thundercat, won't idle unless choke fully on

First thing I would try is some sea foam, you can get it pretty much at any auto parts store...put it in the tank per instructions on the bottle, if the carbs are gummed/dirty... seafoam is you best hope at getting them clean without pulling them.

If sea foam doesnt work, you'll have to yank the carbs, but before you do... pull the tank, set it backwards where the seat was, get about a two foot fuel line (air line works just fine) run it ti the tank and start the bike, take a can of starting fluid (WD 40 works too but stinks when it starts to burn off afterwards) and spray around the base of the outside of the carbs where the boots connect it to the intake, if the engibe revs, you have a leak...cracked boot probably.

If no leaks are detected... then yank the carbs, pull the bowl covers and start cleaning....also, while you have them off pull the slide covers off and check the diaphrams on the needle for rips or cracks as well.

Check/clean.. put everything back together... if it still isnt running right then I have no other suggestions... certainly sounds like an air/fuel problem... if were anything else choking it wouldn't make it better.

SOURCE: please help I have a 1980's model susuki dr 250

I have a 83 DR 250 and i'm not getting enough voltage to create a spark, all I can suggest is that you check your battery and make sure its at full flavour. Check and see if you are getting any voltage prior to the ignition coil (should be 18-35v). If you suspect battery then try clutching it as the alternator moving faster might give you enough to get her going. Also check all your connections and earths. Earth wires are often overlooked and can cause you just as many problems as the actives. So give that a go and get back to me mate. Cheers

What do u do when spark is weak on Yamaha blaster

Check battery voltage, remove spark plug suppressor cap from HT lead and see if spark is good by holding lead in a gloved hand and placing the lead end near the engine. If spark good get a new suppressor cap. Check the plug shows a good spark in the new cap by holding the screw thread to the engine. Poor spark change spark plug. If you get a poor spark from the HT lead then get the ignition coil checked.

My gz 125 marauder starts sometimes the spark is poor what do you think it is

Start with cleaning and checking the spark gap (reajust to right cap setting) replacing the spark plugs, if that doesn't work then move onto replacing the caps... Thats the cheapest and easiest things to do.

If that doesn't work then look at the coil for loose wiring. If that doesn't come up wth anything then replace the HT leads (unless the HT leads and coil are one unit) and finally it could be a faulty coil and so its a simple, but pricey, thing to replace it...

Remove all the wires at the coil and retest. Good idea to use a new plug for testing or insert metal into plug cap and then hold close to metal of engine. If still no spark, remove the coil and take to small engine shop for free test (may have been damaged by heat if it was making contact with flywheel). I use a growler to test the coil. If retest produces spark, most likely faulty oil sensor. Remove the wire from oil sending unit. Dont replace the oil sending unit, just check oil often.

It sounds to me that you have done most all of what is needed. Just take some fine sandpaper to the magnets in the flywheel. After sanding, wipe it clean, then spray it with carb cleaner to remove any possible residue. Now give the magnets a spray coating of clear polyurethane coating. The flywheel will never rust again. Replace the source coil and install a new spark plug. A plug that is carboned up can lessen spark voltage. The last item is the battery. A weak one can rob power. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

Hi John and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
The gap between the flywheel and the coil is 0.0125. The easy way to set it is to get a pack of book matches tear out the matches and use the cover between the magnet and the coil then loosen the coil mounting screws allowing the magnet to pull the coil onto the match book cover. (This has worked flawlessly for 40 + years on literally hundreds upon hundreds of engines regardless of brand.)

Weak spark is caused by either a parasitic load on the kill wire or a bad magneto

Your parts list is here:
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/document/index.aspx?doc=MS4864_B_LO.pdf

If the control wire item 270 of the below link is fine / not grounding or chaffed. This little wire is notorious for grounding at the flywheel brake engine stop terminal and under the flywheel before the magneto.

http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=briggs_and_stratton&mn=09D902-2022-E1&dn=48640005A
then the most likely failure is a weak Magneto (Item 333 above)

Also make sure to check the high tension lead where it comes out of the air-shroud.

Lastly... use a phillips screwdriver in the spark plug cap making a small gap to the engine for checking spark. A bad spark plug can act like a resistor and show weak spark. HOLD THE HANDLE only on the screwdriver.

I have a yamaha generator and it will not start/electric start or pull also will not start

If it was left unused for a few months with fuel in it the fuel forms a gel in the carburettor and may have blocked jets. Try the solution below:
First to check that the plug is sparking;
  • Remove the spark-plug
  • Push it into the HT lead, the lead that normally is pressed onto the top of the plug, and rest it with the metal part of the plug against the metal of the generator
  • Pull the start cord and see if the plug sparks.
If it does the problem is with the fuel. If it doesn't try replacing the plug.

  • Assuming that the plug sparks alright pour about 5ml, 1 teaspoon, of fuel into the opening where you took the spark-plug out of.
  • Dip the end of the spark-plug in fuel so the spark gap is wet and replace the plug in the generator.
  • Try starting the generator
The fuel you poured into the spark-plug opening should burn causing the generator to start. The procedure may have to be repeated 2 to 3 times.

If there was fuel left for a few months in the generator and it has formed gel in the carburettor this procedure may not work. If this happens the only solution is to have the carburettor stripped down and the jets cleaned by a mechanic.

Have a 5600 Gen. with 10 HP B/S engine OHV. Did great during Rita, replaced carb- changed gas-replaced plug- doesn't want to fire it seems. Where Can I find the magneto ? Are there points on the flywheel...

The magneto is by the flywheel. Depending on the age, there maybe points under the flywheel. If so you remove the flywheel and there the points are. Sometimes bugs build cacoons between points, make them inoperable. Newer engines have electronic ignition though. Follow the small wire from the magneto coil ( where the spark plug wire goes) it will either go under the flywheel through a plastic bushing, or to an electronic module. The magneto coils do fail you can test with an ohm meter. Before that test for spark. You can remove the spark plug, and let it rest on the engine to get ground, and turn the engine over. You always need 1-spark, 2 fuel . If you have spark, see if it will hit on starting fluid, if it does, then you have a carb or fuel filter issue. Those shut off valves on the bottom of those tanks, can be a problem
