The problem is caused by having SP3 (Windows Service Pack 3) and the old Wireless Adapter Drivers.

You can use your wireless if you do not install SP3 (Only original Windows XP, or with SP1 or SP2). Alternatively you can have SP3 but no wireless. THE BEST SOLUTION: Have both by upgrading the drivers before upgrading to SP3.

1. Backup your files by either turning off the wireless and going into windows or by using an external enclosure.
a. Turn off wireless by sliding the wireless slider button forward (towards you) with the computer off and then turn on computer and backup.
or if this does not work
b. Buy an external laptop hardrive enclosure (hard drive is SATA-6 interface) and backup with another computer.

2. Restore computer to factory defaults. If you can access the computer try QuickRestore of System Restore. If you can't, either buy a new Windows Xp disk or call Toshiba tech support for a Recovery CD (or just use the one that came with it, if you have it). Note: If you buy a new Windows Xp Disk be sure it is not SP3 and know that you might have to install other drivers; best bet is Recovery Cd.

3. With the computer restored you can choose to just leave it as is and never upgrade to SP3 or you can look for new drivers for the Wireless Adapter chip, install them and then install SP3. Either way you will have a working wireless computer at this point.

It sounds to me like a virus. Boot up from a recover cd or windows cd and reinstall freashly.

If you don't have a recovery cd, contact Toshiba for one. They go around for $40 to $50. If you can't get one, buy Windows Vista and boot up from that and reinstall.

Toshiba Satellite A55-S306 doesn't come out of hybernation

Turn the PC on, when it is booting up, keep hitting "F8" until windows boot options come up, choose "Safe Mode" and then once it boots into safe mode fully, go to the start menu and choose shut down. After it shuts down, turn it back on and it should go back into normal mode. From now on, don't use Hibernate, its buggy and has been since XP.

Sounds like you have snapped the centre connector in the laptop. If you look at the AC connector on the laptop there should b a "pin" in the centre. These frequently snap off, symtoms are :
Battery will not charge
Will not turn on from AC supply.

There are some firm which will replace the ac jack for you but it will cost.
Interent search .. replace DC jack on toshiba
