Question about Fargo Persona C30 Thermal Card Printer

Cannot get Persona C30 to print cards with updated Alphacard syst

I recently took over a job within a sports committee. A computer system was passed on to me with an Alphacard and a Fargo Persona C30 card printer. When I set the computer up, the Alphacard & the printer wouldn't mesh. I figured out how to use the Alphacard and was ready to print, but the program locked up when it was told to print. I saw that the designated printer came up as aDigicard IC 2000, which we do not have. So I changed it to where it said Fargo C30 printer. As soon as I did that it locked up and said Error card software encounters a problem and must shut down Number 5 software error.
I have tried to talk to both Fargo and Alphacard tech people. They had me delete the old versions and upgrade to the newer versions on their sites. I even upgraded the firmware and driver for the printer.
After updating the driver for the printer, the software started to work, but as soon as I changed the printer to the C30 to print from it happened again and froze.
I don't know what to do to fix this!

When I initially received the computer everything was already installed and had all worked prior to me getting it. The only thing is that the person had unplugged everything to transport it to me.

  • pointskeeper Jan 03, 2009

    The OS is windows 2000.

  • pointskeeper Jan 03, 2009

right now the Alphacard program has locked up and unplugging the printer does nothing. I can't even open the program.

  • pointskeeper Jan 03, 2009

I understand what you're saying, but that is what I did this morning. Uninstalled printer, then updated driver. The computer itself recognizes the printer, but the Alphacard program does not want to work with it. As soon as I changed it to the Fargo printer in the Alphacard program, that is where it locked up on me.

  • pointskeeper Jan 03, 2009

I have reinstalled the software numerous times. Every time it does the same thing. The Alphacard program comes up automatically with a different printer and when I switch it to my C30, it freezes and gives me an error.

  • pointskeeper Jan 03, 2009

The driver and firmware were both downloaded from Fargo and are the correct ones for the C30. The printer isn't broken because it will print out a few self tests that I tried on the Fargo Workbench.

When I look for the C30 in the drop down list under the printers to print from in the Alpha Card program it is listed on the bottom with a windows symbol next to it. As soon as I select it it won't send the info to the printer. It just goes to an error message and shuts down the program.

  • pointskeeper Jan 03, 2009

What I don't understand is that the program and the card printer used to all work fine before I got it. The only thing that changed was it being all unplugged and then plugged back in at my house (probably in different usb ports than what the other person used, but still...).

  • pointskeeper Jan 05, 2009

Okay so I finally was able to try the C30 printer and Alphacard reader on another computer. This computer also has XP. It installed perfectly, and I was able to print out a card.

To clarify from before, when I say it locks up on me I mean the actual Alphacard program freezes and shuts itself off "due to an error". The rest of the computer works fine.

I am glad you solved the problem by moving the card to a different computer.

On the first computer, a Bios update may have solved the problem.

You find bios update download on motherboard manufacturer website.

Do that if you want to move the card to the original computer.

Regards.

Install a later version of your Operating System. Check whether the cable is properly connected to your usb port of your cpu unit. If it does, maybe the usb port isn't working try using external usb ports. Install the softwares needed for your C30 printer.

Hi , You need to reinstall the windows , and then reload the printer . Also what i suggest is that you can reload in windows xp and then try installing the printer first and then install alpha card.
Thankyou

Try to uninstall every printer including the C30 including the software. Also make sure that the printer driver and firmware are for the C30 and not the C30e, and that they are Win2000 compatible.

Remove every printer cable weather parallel connection or USB and every non essential USB connection to the computer.

Turn pc off for 30 seconds or so.

Turn pc on and install your drivers and software in the order specified by manufacturer, taking care not to connect C30 printer UNTIL asked by instructions, and doing a restart if specified ( though if needed it will probable do it on its own ).

I also noticed that Fargo does not yet have a troubleshooting guide for this model, but they do have a Diagnostic Tool called Fargo Workbench at the following link, which you might want to try:

http://www.fargosupport.com/troubleshooting_results.asp?pr=73

Could be that the guy who brought it to you bumped the printer and broke it! Have you tried to install it on another pc just to check?

I am sorry for your trouble, and good luck!

The software incorporates user-friendly card design and automation tools with database connectivity and a sophisticated information management platform. Alpha Card Software is compatible with virtually all major ID card printers, including Fargo, Zebra, Magicard, and Evolis. It communicates with file-based data sources such as Microsoft Access, Excel, FoxPro, and dBase, and depending on the edition, supports live ODBC connectivity. The software also seamlessly integrates with digital cameras, scanners, and other devices that support TWAIN or WIA.. therefore your alpha card has defected, because no matter what changes did you do it will not work soon, go for the warranty on it, and replace it

I would also suggest that you remove all the printers (except C30) and retry

Have you removed all the printers except for the C30 from your system, drivers, software, etc from add/remove programs?

I want you to eliminate all print drivers from the system

when you say that the system locks up/freezes .. is it the software or the entire system.. I mean can you eventually just do a "normal" windows 2000 shutdown or do you have to power it off manually?

Also .. have you tried just switching to another usb port?

Maybe the port(s) you are using/tried are faulty and a "working" port is still available.

I know that some of this is "reaching" but believe me .. We are trying to help and there is ALOT of years and experiences going on here .. From all of us ...

  • Jay Glendenning
    Jay Glendenning Jan 04, 2009

Try this also .. I know you have done this .. but maybe not the step I am offering ..

    1) Uninstall the printer and the ALPHA software
    2) Remove the folder(s) for the alpha software (i.e.c:\program files\alphacard
    3) reinstall the printer software (usb disconnected)
    4) setup printer (connect to usb, etc)
    5) Just test test the printer for functionality
    6) Install the alpha card software
    7) configure as necessary (see link)
    8) Setup a card and try to print

    ***** What happens ? *****

FARGO c30 Won't print, gives following error message run time error -2147417848 (80010108) Automation error. the object invoked has disconected from its clients

You have not mentioned the application you are using.

This is probably not a problem with the printer. this is mostly possible due to macros in the application through which you are printing the cards

try to find out if any patches available for your application.

Also try to install your application again after doing uninstall of the same.

Hope this will definitely solve your problem. Do remeber to run microsoft update for your operating system

Software update for persona c30 card printer by fargo

You need to be a little more precise on your question, I am not sure if you are asking for new drivers for the c30 or firmware? or you have it already and dont know what to do. I'll assume its the first.

go to www.fargo.com to download the latest printer drivers for your C30. Also the firmware is up to 4.6.3 i believe.

thank you

In the printing preferences there is an auto detect ribbon button . you should select it.
Your ribbon will be updated. Also if printer asks you if the ribbon is correct select yes. The printer will then print on whatever ribbon you have intalled. This doesnt work with test prints
