I have a Simplicity Prestige garden tractor - when I turn on the PTO to engage the blades, the engine loses power - enough to make it sound like the engine wants to stall, and on occasion it does so when I go up a slight incline.

if it has an electric pto for the blades, it is possible that by engaging that pto, there is not sufficient power left to run the engine
check charge rate , battery condition and pto system

Engine valves need adjusting.
symptoms: starts ok, runs until engine reaches max temp loses power then stops. can't restart when hot. once restarted runs for a while stops again.

There is very little clerance in these valves and temperature alters the lenth by a few thou and the valve don't close fully losing compression, once cold the valves shrink back enough to create enough compression to start again.

whatever the pto is hooked to,is putting pressure on it and slowing it down,if its a deck,then the spindles are bad or binding,blades need to turn freely

Hi, first charge or replace the battery if necessary then check that the mower is charging the battery. The pto is probably fine but it needs battery voltage to engage. If the mower has stopped charging the battery may have had enough voltage to hold the pto in until you disengaged it but not enough to re engage it. Regards Phil.

check your Reverse Gear engage switch and PTO (blades engaged switch), either a bad switch(es) or short in wiring indicating that you are in Reverse with the blades engaged. Is there an override function so that you can mow in reverse? Check that circuit vs. the PTO and reverse gear. good luck

There is somthing in the PTO that is binding up. I am assuming the PTO is for the mower blades. The belt(s) could be binding up, not on the pulleys, etc. The blades should turn by hand easily.

check your blades to make sure that they are not hitting the deck,, this would cause the knocking sound
