Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Sorry to be bringing you the bad news, but chances are, the Memorex is a goner. You could still of course try removing the actual/internal hard drive, connect it to an IDE/SATA to USB adapter and see if that in turn would be recognized by any of the computers. If yes, then it is the electronic/data interface of the Memorex that is defective. If likewise not also, then the actual hard drive is faulty. If the hard drive still spins and makes no mechanical noises, there is a slim chance that the contents could be recovered using file recovery software such as GetDataBack.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Good day. I have a memorex ultratravel drive USB 2.0 160GB. Everytime I connect to any computer I get the message:The pc does not recognize the USB device code 43. Please let me know what i can do. thanks...

Code 43 is the death code - the pc simply cannot communicate with the attached device because the device is not working. This means that the Memorex is dead . Since the electronics board inside it cannot be repaired or replaced it means that yo must buy a new one.

Hi,

As you have described that your Memorex Ultra Traveldrive re-appears repeatedly, indicates that the communication between your computer and your external hard drive is intermittent. The FAT32 format does not produce these types of issues. What we can do first is identify what causes the problem.

Assuming that the hard drive in your Memorex Ultra Traveldrive is in good shape:

Troubleshooting Method #1. Try connecting your Memorex Ultra Traveldrive into another USB port. If the problem persists, use another USB cable for your external hard drive. If the problem still persists, you will have to replace the external casing of your external hard drive. If your external hard drive works with the other USB port perfectly, most likely, the USB port where you originally plug into of your Windows XP machine needs to be checked. That USB port might need some repairing.

Troubleshooting Method #2. Try connecting the external hard drive into another computer and perform the same troubleshooting as Method #1. If your external hard drive works with other computers perfectly, most likely, the USB port where you originally plug into of your Windows XP machine needs to be checked. The USB port might need some repairing.

If the problem only occurs with your Windows XP machine, assuming all USB ports are in good shape, your Windows XP needs to be checked for some software issues.

I hope this works for you. Kindly reply/comment for further assistance. Good Luck!

External memorex does a cling cling sound continuously and cannot be detected on the laptop

The external harddrive has a processing unit to compile and store data. A noice is expected as usually functionaily though much more noise is indication of porcessing of data into backup media files. Allow the computer some time soon after usage to achieve processes without powering off. Durign whihc time backup is attained.

You have a couple of options:
1. Take your USB HD to your friends computer and it your friend can read it.
2. If you feel confident, remove the HD from the USB case and place it inside your computer and see if the HD works.

it is may be due to the usb device driver problem. go to the device manager and see that the usb mass storage driver is installed in ur system . if not then install it from ur motherboard cd and then plug it and certainly it will work.

My HD dont Work anymore

hey! i was having the same problem, but it all seemed to be fine after i opened the case up... what you see inside is a hard drive connected to a small circuit board used to make that hard drive interface with the computer. basically what happened with mine, and probably yours was that the hard drive slipped out of the socket on that circuit board- the drop it took was probably JUST enough to make that happen, given that there's some room inside the case for it to slide a little.

if you don't mind potentially voiding your warranty, i'd suggest you do what i did:

- keep the drive unplugged from everything
- peel off the sticker underneath to access the screws
- slide the hard drive back into the socket on the little green board where the USB sockets are
- close it back up and test it out.

this worked just fine for me, and i hope it works for you too! it also saved what might have been ****-loads of money taking it to a recovery specialist :D

good luck!

Using the 160GB passportHard drive

are there any errors that popped up while copying the music files? if not, then it probably works fine. the files are now stored on the harddrive.
if you want to safely unplug and carry the HD over to another computer, you can., the files should be accessible... that's all a harddive does.
