I'm trying to connect my XBOX 360 to my wireless network via a wired peer connection to a laptop which has wireless connectivity to my network. Will this work? Do I need to run in ad hoc? Do I need to manually enter the IP address, Subnet mask, DNS, etc?? When I run the tests the connection is confirmed, but the IP address test fails. Thanks.

In this guide I will go over how to connect your Xbox 360 to the internet either via wired or wireless connection.
*For a wireless connection you need a wireless access point(router) and either a Xbox with built in wifi adapter or purchase a xbox wireless adapter*
-Turn on your xbox and go to "My Xbox" then go to "System Settings" -Select "Network Settings" -Select the name of your wireless network. If you do not see your network, select "Advanced options" then select "Specify unlisted Network" then enter your network name. -Enter your wireless network security key. It may prompt you to update your console, select yes.
*For a wired connection you need to use an Ethernet cable and plug one end into the back of your xbox and the other end into your router or cable modem.*
-Turn on your xbox and go to "My Xbox" then go to "System Settings" -Select "Network Settings" -Select "Test Xbox Live Connection", afterwards it may prompt you to update your console, select yes.
Now, you are connected to the internet and can enjoy xbox live.
To get a wireless internet connection for Xbox live, you will need a high-speed Internet connection such as cable or DSL and a router, gateway, or wireless access point (WAP) that is compatible with Xbox live. If your XBOX360 console is first generation, you will also need a Xbox 360 wireless networking adapter. If you are using a wired connection, you will need a network cable. Plug the network cable into your router and the other end into your Xbox 360. On your Xbox 360 console, navigate to "MY XBOX" and then select "system settings" Next select "Network settings" and then select "Test Xbox Live connection" Select YES when the prompt appears asking you to update your software. After you become connected, there are two choices: Free membership of Gold membership. Once you are connected, navigate back to "My XBOX" and select your avatar and then select "Join Xbox Live" If you need any more help feel free to contact me. Thank you for using Fixya
Follow these steps if you are trying to use a laptop : 1. Make sure that your XBOX 360 is fully functional and your laptop is connected to the internet by means of a wireless card.
2. Locate the Ethernet cord and connect it to both the computer and XBOX 360. Don't turn on the XBOX 360 yet.
3. On your Vista, click "Start" then "Network". After select the tab "Network and Sharing Center." On the left tab, click on "Manage network connections." You will see a Local Area Connection and a Wireless Internet Connection.
4. Use your mouse to select both icons and right click. Click on Bridge Connections. Turn on your XBOX 360, Sign In, and you will find yourself connected to XBOX LIVE.
5. Once you are done, and you need to use your computer for other uses. Simply right click on the Bridge Connection and select disable.

XBOX 360 will only work properly with a 'genuine' USB WIFI adapter designed specifically for it (and at an over inflated price IMO!). One popular way to play 'network' via the internet is to connect the XBOX 360 to your PC via Ethernet cable and have the PC connecting to the internet either via another ethernet connection or more likely via a Wifi connection which could be via your USB adapter connected to your PC and talking to your Wifi Router)
plug xbox in via ethernet cable, then open network connections. choose the internet connection and the wired network connection. once both highlighted right click and choose bridge connections. then u might have to change settings on xbox but u may be ok.
