Engine smokes and smells like electrical when trying to start craftsman lt1000 mower

Smoke can be a sign of 2 possibilities and one being oil the other being that you flooded it... as for the electrical smell is it coming from the starter from tryin to start it for to long. Careful you could burn up your starter thats never good just give some time between trying and keepthe trying short very short

I 'm having a problem with my craftsman riding mower 17.5 Hp 42" deck.Every time i turn over the engine fuel flows into crank case smoking like crazy.Any suggestions? toddhurst58@yahoo.com

First, check the engine oi level on the dipstick. If it is over full, smell it, does it smell like gasoline? Or maybe it is just over full from putting too much oil in, no big deal, Yet. Drain the oil completely. This engine takes about a quart and a half of oil.

Check the carburetor next, pull off the air filter and look into the air filter base to see if it is oily. If so the air filter will be wet too. What is happening is the oil is being "Pumped" up the breather hose into the carburetor and trying to burn it, causing the smoke.

When you lower the engine oil level this will stop. Run the tractor with the air filter off ( dont mow or drive), the breather hose should not have oil comming out of it anymore. The smoke will still be there for a while, so do it out side. The muffler will have oil that needs to cook out of it. When that stops you should be good.

If there is still "spitting" out of the breather, you may have bad piston rings alowing exaust to enter the oil sump. If this happens even after the oil level was checked, you need a rering job.

Hope this helps

Smoking Craftsman Riding Mower

1st thing, check your dipstick up inside the cap part of it and make sure the O'ring is there and in good condition.
2nd, make certain when you put it back on that you get it on straight and firmly seated. They will only seat one way properly the other way creates a leak into the crankcase and causes oil consumption and smoking. You should be able to tell if it has been improperly installed by an excessive amount of oily dirt accumulated around the threaded area of the cap

Craftsman Won't Start

i think i'd look for a new repairman - did you check the oil? maybe he didn't put any oil back in it! or maybe the carb float stuck and the crankcase is full of gas. lift the hood and look for burnt wires or at the deck for a burnt belt - try to turn the engine over by hand [the round center with the perforations]. does it click when you try the key? if, not, check the fuse. without knowing the area that the smoke came from it's hard to single out a cause

17.5 h.p. b/s craftsman tractor oil pushes into carb. smokes bad!

Make sure it's not overfilled with oil.
if this is not the case, then you have excessive blowby, which is what blows past your rings when the air/fuel mixture ignites. there is only one explanation for this, faulty rings, and that's what it sounds like to me. the blowby forces the oil into the vent leading to the filter, and back into the cylinder, where it burns, creating blue smoke.

Hard starting smokes white like gas is getting into cylinders

White smoke in a small engine is oil. Oil in the cylinder will create too much pressure for the engine to achieve compression. Make sure the engine is not getting fuel into the oil and thinning the mixture (literally smell the oil... gasoline and oil smell nothing alike, if it smells like gas, it is). If this is the case, the carb is leaking fuel into the engine, thinning the oil and causing the oil to leak past the rings into the cylinder head, through the valves and, from there, into the exhaust to burn off. Black smoke indicates a direct fuel issue in a small engine, white is oil based.
