ThaMp3Doctor is correct ^, still as of 3/11/09 this mp3 player WILL NOT play aac format music which means if you purchase your music off of i-tunes like I do, it WILL NOT WORK, it will tell you to go to rcaaudiovideo.com to download a firmware upgrade that DOES NOT EXIST. All in all not a bad product, just happens to be incompatible with i-tunes, BIG MISTAKE and a WASTE OF MONEY. Take it from somebody who learned the hard way...

There is no AAC firmware upgrade. These players are not compatible with AAC (iTunes) format. Most non-iPod players are incompatible, but there are a few exceptions here and there. The box on the player has to list AAC, and it can't have a proviso attached to the AAC, such as "non-protected" AAC. The cashiers at the places that sell them don't know jack about compatibility, usually.

I had this same problem. You need to do the following:

1) Back up your Files: Back up your music by copying the music from your MP3 player and pasting them into a newfolder on your desktop, just in case your music get deleted. Do not skip this step!

2)Got to Website: Select the player availible at link below
http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/categories.aspx?product=318&post=5

3) Download Click on the "Downloads" button beneath the picture of your player on the far right side

4) Click "To update the firmware of the TH1611 mp3 player click here"

Follow the directions!

It needs aac upgrade

My RCA Pearl gave me the AAC firmware message with some files until I followed all the troubleshooting instructions that popup when running the firmware update software. The firmware with AAC upgrade is here.

Follow these instructions and it will work:

run the firmware update software software,
reset the player by removing the battery or holding the power button for 10s for players with internal batteries,
hold the play button while inserting the unit into usb,
release the button once the software changes from "searching" to "initalizing",
check the box to format the data on the player,
and click start.

When I did this update without formatting, the aac fix did not work. I

Wont go pass the frot screen then it always turns off

Last night I replaced my battery and my unit would not go any further than the Pearl logo. So this morning I downloaded the firmware upgrade from http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2556, and followed all the troubleshooting instructions that popup when you start the program:

start the program,
remove the battery,
hold the play button while plugging into usb,
release the play button the the term "initalizing"

replaces "searching",
click the start button to replace the firmware.

Note: when I tried this last week to fix the aac error message, it did not fix the problem with some music files. After following these steps today, plus making sure the format data box was selected, I can now play the troublemaking files without errors.

Acc firmware update problem

Same here, I downloaded the firmware update that should allow aac to play but it's a no go. In my case I'm trying to play itunes (mpeg4) and it wont play. Yes I know this is a mp3 player but that's what I thought the update fixed although I may be mistaken. Funny thing is this, if I turn the volume up and down continually it will let me play the song lol. This whole incompatibility issue has to do with these bully companies blocking users from using other companies with their products (worked for microsoft so why not). Solution for me: buy an ipod.

P.S. In my opinion this is as bad if not worse then the public downloading illegal music. It's just that in this case it's a corporate entity perputrating the offense so don't hold your breath on it being fixed anytime soon.

Rca th1611 mp3 needs update but does not seem to update.

Mine didn't want to upgrade either. I kept trying it. I would notice that the box to continue would just flash for an instance then shut back off. I just kept trying to click on the box, and finally I timed it just right and it went ahead with the upgrade. Hope it will work for you.
