SOURCE: GE Prodigy Washing machine making clunking noise

One common problem area is the clutch assembly. The clutch is built on top of the motor, the motor drives the clutch and the clutch assembly drives the rest of the washer. The clutch gets very noisy when parts inside are worn out. The shoes lining that drives the inner drum of the clutch wear off and you will get a metal on metal sound. Clutches often can be rebuilt, but sometimes they are too worn and replacing the whole clutch is the best repair. Please use this link here for clutch replace and repair info. The belt and pump may be the next items to check for noises. How to access the washer. Clutch repair help.

Get a repairman in to check for a damaged drive train on the washer and an electrician in to check the wiring in your house

Switching a high power electric shower on can cause some voltage drop which in turn causes the lights to dim for a short period.

But having a washer stalling on wash doing it sounds as if you have some major issues with the house wiring.

Could be a bad circuit breaker or outlet. You need to check the outlet with a voltmeter. If it is ok then i would think the washing machine internal power supply is going out.

Electric trips out when machine switched on

ok, it may be best not to use that machine until you have upgraded it to its proper breaker. From what you said, the lights in the house experience a voltage drop when the machine is on. This can only mean one thing, they are on the same breaker. The breaker will have 4 inputs, where to two outer ones will provide the 240 volts needed by your machine. If you have a multimeter or voltmeter, check the outlets for the 240v range for the washer, and 120v for the outlets in the vacinity and any other rooms where the lights may dim. the possibility still reamins that the house is just old and the wiring is bad. then that would be a rather expensive fix. Idealy you want your washer and dryer on a breaker together, but seperate from everything else. A high quality breaker goes for $20, cheap ones are $8. Also, when touching the breaker, make sure it is flipped to the off possition, i have personaly felt the grasp of those connectors many times and believe me, it will wake you up.
