A blacked-out screen doesn't necessarily indicate a broken monitor.
If the computer has run out of charge or is in hibernation or sleep mode,

if the screen is too dark, or if the display cable has come disconnected from the motherboard, the screen may appear black or fail to turn on.

To fix a blacked-out laptop screen, troubleshoot the screen settings, check the LCD connector and see if the computer is awake and receiving power.

Touch the touchpad or move the external mouse to see if the computer is asleep or hibernating. If the computer fails to respond, press "Enter" on the keyboard.

Press the power button if the screen remains black.

Confirm that the power indicator light, found at the front of the computer or above the keyboard, is glowing solid green or blue.

Confirm that the power adapter is plugged into the computer and into a wall outlet. Confirm that battery indicator light is glowing solid green or blue.

Hold down the "Fn" key. Press the up-arrow to see if the screen brightness increases.
Some computers also use the "F6" or "F7" keys to increase screen brightness.

Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off the laptop.
Remove the AC adapter from the computer, close the screen, and then turn the PC over.

Slide the battery latch to eject the battery.
Pull the battery out of its compartment.

Turn the computer back over, open the lid, and insert the edge of a flathead screwdriver or other flat, solid object beneath the bezel above the keyboard.

Wedge the edge of the keyboard bezel off of the top cover.
Work your way along the edge of the keyboard bezel to loosen it.
Pull the bezel off the laptop.

Trace the cable coming from the laptop screen to the connector found beneath the bezel. Reconnect the display cable to the motherboard if the cable has come loose from the connector.

Line up the tabs on the bezel with the slots along the top of the keyboard. Insert the right edge of the bezel into the gap above the keyboard, and then push the bezel back in place.

Turn the computer back on. If the laptop screen is still blacked out, connect an external monitor to the video port on the side of the PC to confirm that the video card isn't defective.

If the external monitor works, the LCD screen could be broken.

If the monitor doesn't work, the motherboard or video card might need to be replaced.

hope this helps

How to connect lw etv 01 to a laptop using vga

Most laptops require you to tap the F3 or F4 key to select a display or use both internal and external displays. Likewise, if you have no display when powering your laptop you can tap that same key and get the laptop display back most of the time. The key in question is used to select the laptop display, an external display, or both.

Acer as3810t no display

OK, best thing to do is test the external video port with a desktop monitor. The laptop will have a Fn key (function) commonly blue in color. The display icon in conjunction with the Fn key will switch between the 2 displays. Common issues with laptop displays is the back light inside the LCD display of the laptop. Power on laptop in a dark room and sometimes you can see the display, just slightly.
If you can see it, replay or have somebody replay the back light in the display. Was This Helpful? Yes OR No *Please vote yes if this helped you

Screen will not load just white lines

Hi,

Does external display work fine? If you have not checked, connect an external display like desktop monitor or a LED TV which has VGA connector to your laptop's vga port. You may have to use some fn keys combination to switch from laptop display to external. If external display works fine then check the display cable connecting laptop motherboard to laptop display. And also check laptop LCD/LED screen. You may have to try another with another screen in such scenario.

Connect external monitor to laptop - how do you do this - ie which keys to press to convert it over to the external screen once connected?

Almost all laptops, especially those made within the last few years, have the ability to connect an external display, such as a CRT monitor, flat panel display, or Projector, and have the display sent to that device instead of to the laptop display.
Connect the monitor, flat panel, or projector to the laptop's 15-pin video connection on the back of the computer as shown to the right. Once connected, your laptop may automatically switch to the new external display or you may be required to press a sequence of keys in order to switch from the laptop to the external display.
The key sequence can vary depending on laptop, however is often either: Fn + F3, F4, F5, F8, or F9. This means if you were fore example to press and hold Fn + F3 at the same time it'd switch between your laptop display to your external display. The function key will often be labeled as CRT/LCD or have a picture of a monitor on the key or close to the key. Unfortunately, the keys pressed to switch displays is dependent on the model and manufacturer of the laptop. If none of the above key sequences work, consult your laptop documentation or consult your laptop manufacturer.
Some laptops also have the ability to have the display on both the laptop and external display or a single display at a time. Laptops with this ability can switch between these modes by continuing to press the same function keys until in the mode the user wants

The laptop screen is black when the computer is conencted to a data projector. No function keys solve the problem. What to do?

This is more than likely a function of Windows and not the laptop. Go into the control panel and then into Display. In Display click on settings and see if you have more than one display listed, you should have the laptop display and the projectors also listed. Set the projector display to clone the laptop display and make sure the laptop display is the primary display. Click on identify and this will show you a 1 and 2 for the appropriate display. Set the accordingly and you should be in business.

I have been using my Iogear kvm switch for almost 2 years now to switch between a desktop and a laptop, both Windows XP. I unplugged the laptop in a hurry to go do a presentation, and plugged everything...

This almost sounds like the display setting on your laptop was changed to an external device. Most laptops are designed to be hooked up to an external display, such as a monitor or projector, specifically for presentations. You can alternate the display options in the following ways:

  1. Laptop display only
  2. External display only
  3. Laptop+External clone
  4. Laptop display + extended desktop on external display (dual monitor setup)
Check your laptop display settings and make sure that it's not in presentation mode (options 2-4) before connecting the KVM switch to it. It may be recognizing the KVM switch as an external display in option 4 mode.

NO VGA DISPLAY TOSHIBA SATELLITE M300 FOR VISTA

Hi What precisely do you mean by VGA display, is your laptop not displaying anything on lcd screen,or its having problem giving display on an external monitor connected via a vga port.
if there is no display on the laptop LCD screen, then turn the laptop on and observe for beeps sounds and hard disk spinning sound if still no display is available plug the laptop to external monitor and again restart the laptop. if there is no display on the external screen and laptop is displaying well in LCD, Then most probably you need to press some keyboard combination on laptop keyboard eg: Fn + f4 , refer to your laptop manual also.

Laptop malfunctioning

Connect any Desktop monitor to the Laptop and check whether the Display. if the display is fine on the Desktop monitor screen then it can be identified as the Laptop screen malfunctioning.
And if the Display has the same issue that on the Laptop screen
then it can be treated as the Display card issue.
However, it seems to be Harwre related issue. Get the laptop veriufied under Technical supervision to repair the Laptop's display card or the Laptop screen to be replaced if the display is fine on the Externally connectd Monitor.
