Will not stay running as well as hard to start

Have changed gas filter and fule line, change gas with new, after many pulls it will start but will not run long enough warm up. iv'e been able to get it to warm up a couple of times but when i go to use it it will die. when it does fun it bolws out oil

Hi David

Make sure you are getting spark at the spark plug, to do this:
Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting a bright blue spark at the spark plug.
You do this by grounding the plug on the head of the engine and pulling the crank rope...watching the plug for spark.
If you are getting a nice blue spark then skip A below and go to B.
A...If you do not get a nice blue spark then you may need to replace the electronic module.
Note: If you have to replace the module be sure to measure the position it is in and be sure to install it in the same position
Normally the clearance is around .10 thousandsands
Also write the measurement down on a piece of paper for later reference, this measurement is critical to starting of the engine later.
B...Also take some fine grit sandpaper (not emery) and lightly sand the flywheel where the magnet is located to clean any rust or corrosion from the magnet area.
You can also try to lightly sand the module metal face to increase the possibility of ignition of the old module before replacement.

Sounds like you have dirt/debris in your caburetor jets,fuel passages or a diaphgram that is becoming non-flexible.
Check/Clean/Replace your Air Filter, a dirty air filter can make your engine run to rich with fuel.
Note: You should also check for carbon build-up in the exaust,as it can have an effect on starting and running of the engine if the carbon build-up is heavy.
Also be sure to check and clean your spark arrestor in the exaust,if you have one installed on your engine.
Note: ALWAYS USE COMPRESSED AIR TO CLEAN YOUR JETS AND PASSAGES, VERY IMPORTANT.
Note:Before you disassemble the carburetor:
Write down on a piece of paper or take a picture of how the linkage attaches to your carburetor for later reference when you go to reinstall your carburetor.
Mark each piece with a awl, or some kind of instrument that will make an alignment scratch before you disassemble the carburetor into separate pieces.
That way you will know which way it goes back together when you reassemble it.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or by using a very small shot of starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that, and it will flush the gunk out of the jets,but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Be sure to check your fuel tank for water and dirt/debris, if there is water/debris then you need to clean your tank.
Check you fuel line condition after a while they will degrade and need replacment.
Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one, normally they are located in the fuel tank of chainsaws and weedeaters.
When you remove your fuel lines from the carburetor be sure to make a drawing to how the lines are connected to the carburetor or take a pictue for later reference.
Normally the big line will be the line the fuel filter is connected to inside of the tank.The smaller of the two lines is the return to the fuel tank from the carburetor after it is pumped thru the carburetor by the primer bulb.
Make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil if your using a two cycle chainsaw or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture...too much oil as it can cause hard starting and excessive smoking.
If the chainsaw/trimmer is over a couple of years old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit,because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
The diaphgram may look good and flexible, but it can be deceiving and not act as a fuel pump as it should because it has become too hard and will cause hard starting,start and run and shut off, etc.
When you clean your carburetor, I recommend that you use a laquer thinner type cleaner to clean and dissolve the laquer build-up in the float and needle jet passages.
Be sure to remove all plastic and rubber parts before using the laquer thinner because it can dissolve the plastic parts and render them unuseable.
Be sure to use COMPRESSED AIR to blow out all the fuel and air passages.The higher air pressure is needed to blow some of the trash/debris from the fuel or air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Keep in mind that the float (if you have one) for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instructions you get with the carburetor kit, or you could also ask the parts man that you get your kit from.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their original position before you started.
Note:
The little spring inside of the carburetor goes under the float arm.
That is where your fuel inlet needle/float valve is located...on the arm at the end.
Normally there is a small indention in the carburetor base and a small protrusion on the underneath of the float arm where the spring will be in the right postion for installation.
The spring will set in the indention and you will install the float arm with the needle/float valve and float rod into position over top of the spring,you will push down until it is in position and then you can tighten the screw that holds the float arm assembly in position.
Once you have your carburetor cleaned/rebuilt that should solve your problem.

I would suggest cleaning the carb (remove it) and air filter. There are a few really small passages in the carb that need to be cleaned which get gummed up due to the 2 stroke mixture and sitting for the winter. (Even if you drained the fuel)

DO NOT use a piece of wire or anything to clean out any small passages. Use carb cleaner and compressed air, put it back on, and see if it's better.

If that doesn't do it, a carb rebuild is in order. Not very many parts on those little buggers. If the cleaning doesn't solve it, it's most likely a bad diaphram from sitting and drying out. (Which I'm learning towards due to the lack of pressure when you prime and having it starve for fuel and die after a minute of running). There is a square plate on the bottom of the carb held on by 3 or 4 screws. That's the cover for the diaphram. Remove the screws and plate and look at the diaphram to see if it has a hairline crack, if it's sticking (there's a spring under it), or if any thing else looks out of whack.

Sounds like you have dirt/debris in your carburetor jets or fuel passages.

Make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil mix if your using a two cycle mower or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.
If the mower/weedeater is over a year old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit,because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
I recommend that you use a laquer thinner type cleaner to clean and dissolve the laquer build-up in the float and needle jet passages.

check to make sure the air filter and the fuel screen are clean, the screen is the little white plastic piece on the end of the hose in the tank. if it is still sputtering try cleaning the bell out on the carb. it is the little metal cylinder on the bottom of the carb where it holds the fuel until it evaporates into the engine if it gets clogged the engine will not run properly.

The ethanol in gasoline softens fuel lines to the point they collapse.

drain out all of the old gas first, put in fresh fule fully charge battery and retry starting her up, if no luck starting unclip fule pipe from injector rain and cranck motor over if fule spills the fule pump is working ok, pull off ecu plug and spray with wd40 all plugs and refit check spark do not let spark plug hand loos this must stay earthed or it can wreck the ecu if motor starts up, when it starts up some injuctor cleaner in fule tank and run engine up

My 2001 chevy silverado is having trouble starting i changed the fule filter and i can hear my fule pump runing but it takes right at 3 cranks for it to start.. It would try to start but just die on me......


Sounds like it. On new automobiles the fuel pump is in the gas tank, cools the pump, but you can disconnect the pump and put on an outside pump instead of pulling the gas tank and replacing gas pump and tank. Leave old pump in gas tank.

Yes it wil not let you run your motorhome out of fuel they set it up that way so you dont strand yourself you may have a air bubble in the fuel line to the generator try blowing air generator fule line back into the tank

Check the diaphragm in the carburetor of each saw for hardness or cracking of the material. This is a common problem with older saws, but easily fixed by replacement. Check the fuel filter within the tank of each saw for being plugged--a problem that occurs when leaving old fuel mix in the tank for long periods. Hope this helps!

Inspect your hose routing. it should be similar to this:

  • The hose in the tank with the filter on the free end connects directly to the carburetor input connection.
  • If the saw is equipped with a primer bulb, the output line from the carburetor connects to the suction side of the primer (once the bulb is collapsed it draws fuel from the tank through the carburetor to refill as it inflates).
  • The pressure side of the primer returns displaced fuel to the tank as it is depressed. HTH

It wont start.


If it was stored with ethanol fuel on board your hoses may have holes or cracks as well. Inspect them carefully. It sounds as if there is a fuel delivery problem. Check the fuel filter on the free end of a hose in fuel tank (manufacturer recommends an annual replacement). Check all fuel delivery lines especially at fittings and bends for cracks and holes. If those are good then the likely cause is internal parts of the carburetor are dirty or have failed. HTH

Starts but wont stay running


Check your gas filter. When you ran out of gas, you got any rust in your lines and filters. Change the inline filter and use an air compressor and blow the line TOWARDS THE TANK. Take the gas cap off first. There is also a filter in your tank.By blowing the line you may unstop that filter.

its your fule filter theres 2 of them i the 86 ford ranger you need to change them the location of the fule filters are on google just tipe in fule filter 1986 ford ranger location it should pop up there about 8 dollors a peace easy fix and your truck is like new also get a new battey if you havent k have a good day. oh i know this because i own one had the same problem
