Turn the printer off and on to see if it can automatically clear some or all of the jam. Many printers provide an error-code listing on the front panel display for the area where the jam occurred. If your printer shows an error code, be sure and check the printer manual to see if that identifies the area of the printer where the jam occurred. Step12Turn off the printer. Step3Remove any paper trays. Inspect them for wrinkled or damaged paper. StepOpen any other doors that give access to the printer's paper path and to the toner or ink cartridge. Step35If necessary, remove the toner or ink cartridge. Place it in a bag or away from light to avoid damaging it. Step46S3eemingly 'stalled If you find a piece of jammed paper, remove it by holding it with both hands and pulling firmly (see A). The goal is to keep the paper from tearing. If several pieces are jammed together, try pulling out the middle piece first to loosen the jam. Step57266_a2.jpg If the paper does tear, try rotating the roller gears manually to free the paper (see B). Don't force anything, though. Step6Replace the toner or ink cartridge and paper trays, close any doors you opened and turn the printer back on. Step79If the printer paper jam message still appears, then there is still some paper in the printer. Reinspect the paper path. If the problems continued try step11Inspect the paper trays to make sure they are not overloaded. To determine if this is the problem, do a test print with only one piece of paper loaded in the paper tray. (If this turns out to be the problem, keep the paper tray half-full in the future.) Step22Check that the type of paper being used falls within the printer manufacturer's recommendations. For example, paper designed for ink-jet printers doesn't necessarily work well in laser printers. High-quality, bonded paper will cause paper jams in some printers; look for bonded paper that is "laser and ink-jet compatible." Step33If someone has recently printed labels on this printer, check to see if a label has come unglued from a sheet and become stuck inside the printer. Step44Check the gears and rollers for stuck shreds of torn paper from previous jams. Turn off the printer before you attempt to remove the bits of paper.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Occasionally cleaning your laser printer rollers with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol will extend their life and make them less likely to cause jams.
    • If you reuse paper to print on the back side, make sure that the paper is not torn, wrinkled or dog-eared. Tears, wrinkles or bends in paper can cause paper jams.

I bought an HP Deskjet F4400 printer for college and it keeps saying the printer is offline. I have a Macbook Pro, so there's no "Control Panel." I looked under "system preferences" but was unable to right...

its likely the printer port that the printer is assiged to. I assume its plugged in via usb. power on the printer, then connect the usb cable. go into the printer properties, look for printer port. do not use LPT1 LPT2 or Com anything. make sure printer port is set to the USB port. Its a mac so it may be tricky to find. Quite often these printers set to LPT1 by default which is incorrect on a USB printer. good luck.

Printing,hp deskjet3420

Hi Malcom,

The HP3420 is connected to your PC through the USB port and not through the LPT1/parallel port.

You have to change the port setting. Go to Start, Printers, right click on HP3420, click on Properties, go to the Ports tab, check/select USB, OK.

Alternately, you may have to re-install the drivers for the HP3420 and allow the program to Search for the printer connection. Clicking on the button Stop Searching will auto install it again to LPT1.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
