Open Question

I have a Atari lynx with a bad mosfet. I have connected the negative connected to the headphone, powering it on, but the picture is very light. How do I fix this?

    just to clarify, the problem I'm having is with the picture, not the power. The picture is too light, even with the backlight set all the way down. It apperars there is some corrosion on one of the twin capacitors below the mosfet. Could that be affecting the picture?

Dv6000 power light does not come on any more





A) Of course check the output of the AC adapter (Charger), FIRST.
You're looking for 18.5 Volts (DC) at the output plug of the AC adapter.

[Center hole of plug is Positive. Outer cylindrical metal shell is the Negative connection ]

B) Next check the DC Power Jack. (The jack on the laptop where the AC adapter plugs into)

With the Battery removed, see if you can wiggle the center pin of the jack.

Any perceptible movement means a problem with the DC Power Jack.
Fortunately the DC Power Jack for this series of Notebook PC's, has a DC Power Jack Harness. The jack is mounted to a small removable circuit board, that has a wiring harness attached to it, and the harness plugs into the motherboard. No soldering required,

AC adapter checks out, DC Power Jack checks out, check the two Power MOSFET's listed at the start of this solution.

Now let's talk. See how the FDS6679 and AO4407 use the D2PAK surface mount?

They use J-leads for connection. The J shaped flat leads that come out of the body of the P.MOSFET. In the above example there are two.
The left view shows a Top view, the right view shows a Bottom view.

Talk about easy to unsolder, and solder.
Just make sure when installing the new one/s you use a Clip Heatsink on each J-lead, as you solder each J-lead to the motherboard.

Use Desoldering Braid, (Solder Wick), to remove solder.
Desoldering Tool, (Solder S-ucker tool), is for the birds.

To conclude:

1) Bad AC adapter - You replace

2) Bad DC Power Jack Harness -

You replace?
FOUR DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS, plus shipping, and tax.

$100 to $125

3) Bad Power MOSFET -

You replace?
Cost of .032 Rosin core solder, rosin flux, small flux brush, 25 Watt soldering iron with No.2 chisel tip, Desoldering Braid, and P.MOSFET/s.

It's One Dollar and 1 cent, for a FDS6679 from Mouser, plus shipping, and tax.

It's about $70 to $150 for a motherboard, depending on where you buy it.
And that isn't including the $125, or so for labor.

(Very few real techs left. Instead of diagnosing, and replacing those cheap P.MOSFET's, they would rather sell you a motherboard.
Easier for ***** in a repair shop with little to no skills, and also more coins, $$$$$$$)

My Atari Lynx 2 will not power on, so I would like to try and open it up to look inside. I have removed the screw by the battery compartment, but it still will not open. Are there any other screws which...

The original Lynxes are easy to take apart, for whatever reason you
needed. The new Lynx IIs are more puzzling, but not impossible. The
following set of (edited) instructions are provided by Ken Small

"It's not hard, but there are a lot of fragile pieces and the electronics
are sensitive to all the things that electronics are usually sensitive to,

"First, remove the rubber pads from the bottom of the Lynx. They're glued
on, but they peel off pretty easily. Beneath them are screw holes --
remove them. Note that it's *very* easy to tell if your lynx has been
opened, since you leave holes in the glue stuff. Take off the back of the

"Remove the screw located inside the battery area. Be careful when
replacing this; it can strip easily. Mine is stripped, but the rest of
the case holds the battery bay in place. Remove the battery bay piece.

"You will see a circuit board with a couple of wires and circuit ribbons
attached to it. Carefully unplug all of these. The ribbon in particular
seems flimsy. Do not puncture or otherwise damage it. Remove the circuit

"Beneath the circuit board is an assembly screwed to the inside of the
case, which contains the screen, button contacts and buttons. A warning
when unscrewing this-- the are LOTS of small pieces in here, and they're
particular about how they go back in. In particular, be careful about the
A/B buttons, which are slightly different sizes, and the rubber mat around
the LCD screen, which has nothing to hold it in place. (NOTE: Also, there
are contacts on the circuit board hooked up to the high-voltage supply for
the backlight. They won't do any damage, but can give a mild shock.)

"The last thing is the joypad contact itself. This is a small rubber mat
held in place by a snap-on piece of plastic. You can carefully remove the
plastic to get under the apron, where the contacts can be cleaned. Clean
in-between the contacts, being careful not to abrase the contacts
themselves. They look like half-circles with a small (half-millimeter or
less) space between. Grunge between them can register an intermittent
false contact, which looks to the player like the joypad is being quickly,
repeatedly pressed in one direction."

Power issues with Amp

You have an internal short or your pos/neg or speaker wire connections are shorted somewhere. Double check them and if they are good the amp is bad

When powering the stuff there should be light indicated that there is a power on it. how ever if these not been observed, power adapter maybe busted. try to fix it or replace it. Please refer to the atari manual for the correct operation of your stuff.
