The laser moves along a track by a set of gears. That clicking sound you hear is the laser getting stuck at a certain point and trying to move forward. The laser has to move the full length back and fourth to read the disc. There isn't a whole lot you can do, if its under warranty your best of sending it to the manufacture to be repaired. Otherwise you will have to buy a new one. With that said you could take the cover back off, plug it in (don't touch anything)load a disc and watch it, you should see the laser stop and the gears start skipping over each other. A gear may even have came loose and is no longer spinning or has fallen out. You can attempt to fix this (make sure its unplugged when you are touching the inside). NOTE:: Do not force the laser assembly back and fourth as you will damage it more. Post back with any further info or questions you may have. Thank you for choosing Fixya!

SOURCE: I HAVE A PANASONIC SA-CH72
Unplug the unit, then unscrew the metal cover over the top and sides of the unit. Then unscrew the black plastic cover that goes over the top section of the back. This will allow you to get out a CD that is stuck in the back.
