How does a transfer switch for a manual generator work

A transfers switch function whether manual or automatic is to ensure the utilitya nd generator can never be connected at the same time. If you have a manual start generator, you should have a manual transfer switch installed. Throw the transfer switch to emergency position (which disconencts your home or loads from utility) start the generator and close the generator breaker. When power comes on reverse this procedure

Do I need a main breaker in front of a manual transfer switch

I'll assume you are isolating the main breaker that carries in current from the pole (this is called a service disconnecting means). By the term "main breaker" I'm assuming you are referring to a feeder disconnect; that is to protect the generator from over-current.
Under these assumptions, no, the generator has a circuit breaker capable of interrupting the circuit leading to the transfer switch. Under these conditions, you could view the genset's breaker as a "main".

Trace, no power from line one from either gen set or shore power. Have rebooted, and when I invert the coach works normal. Charge system to house and coach batts perfec

If a normal install, the shore power and generator will go through a transfer switch then to the inverter. If when inverting 120 VAC circuits are OK, then the problem must be before the inverter. I would suspect that it is the transfer switch.

Disconnect shore power, make sure generator in NOT running then take a look at the transfer switch these are in a boat or RV but either can lead to vibration problems which can lead to loosening wire connections which can lead to heating and burning. It may be something as simple as a wire coming loose. (Which could be dangerous!)
Whether or not the contacts in the relays are OK, check and/or tighten all electrical connections. It's a good idea to check and tighten all electrical connections regularly.

Some transfer switches can be repaired by replacing just the relays. Other units (like mine this year!) will need to be replaced entirely.

GE Generator 10kw model #040448. TRANSFER SWITCH FAULT message being displayed. Generator works fine. Generator output load voltage = 233V.

This generator has a built in transfer switch. If you do not have an external source of 240 volts going in to the unit (utility power), the transfer switch will show a fault or "abnormal" reading. If you do have utility power going in to the transfer switch, and the generator is on then you have a faulty transfer switch. It is time to warranty or get a replacement switch.

No power coming out of generator or breakers in our rv

Is there power at the generator output leads, where they terminate? Find out first that will isolate a generator, or transfer switch error

Im about to install a kubota GL 6500S deisel generator in a house and i have the diagram to wire it up. but i need to know what all i need to do the job as far as materials?

1. Transfer switch
2. 10/3 and ground Romex to connect main panel to transfer switch.
3. Screws to mount the transfer switch.
4. Plastic Wire U clips for the Romex.
5. Plug adapter to connect transfer switch to the Generator. (should come with transfer switch)
6. Your probably going to need a drill, extension wire and a 1 inch wood bit to route the wiring. (you can route 10/3 with a 5/8 inch hole but it will be fussy.
7. Do not forget the permit! If your not permitted correctly and you have an electrical fire your insurance company can refuse the claim. (Usually the permit is issued to a qualified electrician)
8. Do not wire the whole house from generator power.
9. A word to the wise.... give refrigerators, freezers and Air-conditioners a 10 - 15 minute break before powering them up after a power loss. They will just cycle the thermal overload due to the high side pressure being to high. Let them cool off and equalize before restarting them.
and the compressors will not start.
10. You will have to install a cover and grommet over the transfer switch wires where they pass through the wall from the Generator power feed.
11. Sealant if needed.

That is about all I can think of for now.

Thanks for using FixYa.

by ats I assume that you mean an (automatic transfer switch) this is a very non forgiving installation please (no disrespect intended) get a professional to do this for you. you are mixing generator supplied voltage with residential hydro depending on your situation you could end up back feeding the grid and put your self and / or your neighbours in harms way no b/s my friend I have seen it "not pretty"
