ok, i need you to clarify a bit.
When you insert a dvd/cd does the autorun start up? or not? what i need to know is if your CD rom is workig or if it is broken.
Say your dvd rom's drive is e: if you insert a cd, and in the address bar type e:\ can you access it or not? If you can, the problem might be an autorun virus. I've had many results by running "Trojan Remover" which can be downloaded for free. Try that and run a scan.

Let me give this a shot.

1. Right click on MY COMPUTER from your desktop.
2. Click PROPERTIES
3. I assume you're using WIN2K so click the HARDWARE tab.
4. Click DEVICE MANAGER.
5. Under M700 it should be the 5th item down I believe. DVD/CD-ROM drives.
6. Expand that listing. You most likely have a yellow exclamation point there, yes?
7. Right click on Compaq DVD-ROM SD C2402 and if the option is there please click ENABLE. If your option is DISABLE please continue reading.
8. Right click on Compaq DVD-ROM SD C2402 again. This time click PROPERTIES.
9. The 3rd tab is DRIVER. Please click that.

(PAUSE HERE AND LEAVE THOSE PROPERTY WINDOWS OPEN)

10. Double click on MY COMPUTER on your desktop and proceed to your C:WINNTsystem32
11. In the folder C:WINNTsystem32drivers you are most likely missing redbook.sys and cdrom.sys  In the folder C:WINNTsystem32 you are missing storprop.dll (I HAVE BOTH FILES BUT MY FILE SHARING SITE IS DOWN.)

12. After the files get placed in the appropriate locations return to the DRIVER tab of the PROPERTIES window. From here or from the ADD NEW HARDWARE wizard of your laptop you'll be able to search for a suitable driver and barring some other crazy reason for this happening you'll now have those files.

In case you can not find the driver files:

Good luck!

My transcend dvd writer TS8XDVDRW-K this model is not working. i troubleshooted it and it said that the driver for it is missing. i checked the Cd which came with it and there is n driver in it. please...

This device does not (on Windows XP/Vista/7) need any drivers other than the standard drivers supplied with the operating system.

If you are missing the manual, you can find it here:

http://www.transcendusa.com/Support/DLCenter/index.asp?LangNo=0&ItemID=TS8XDVDRW-K&axn=SRH1_RLT&DLKeyWd=TS8XDVDRW-K

I suggest that you use the device manager (right click on "MyComputer" and select Manage My Computer, then Device Manager) to remove the device, then unplug it from your machine and then plug it back in again. This will force Windows to re-detect the device, and should cure your problem.

My laptop dell latitude d 500 lost the power mode

Right-click on MyComputer>Properties. In the resulting window, click on tab Hardware, then in the Device Manager button. In the Device Manager window Check for the Display Adapter. It may have a yellow question mark. The driver for your Video card is missing. Right-Click on the yellow question mark, and select "Update driver" from the pop-up menu. Follow the instructions on screen. It may be necessary to download the drivers from the Dell website.

Usually the optical eye or the read board in the drive has failed when this happens. Your only option is replacing the drive.
